Do they still make new figures?
And are there alternatives for the mines of moria beginners box?
Do they have minatures based on the book of the hobbit?

Yes, GW continues to produce new figures for LotR, which are for the most part usable in the SBG and WotR.

Yes, buy the big rulebook and whatever miniatures take your fancy.

No, the New Line license only allows them to produce miniatures based on the 3 LotR films. Hopefully the release of the Hobbit movie will herald a gamut of new miniatures though.

What about the battle of the Five armys box???

Its basically a stand alone bord game, similar to the SBG, or WotR I don´t know really but its a game and it is affordable

Those rules are based on Warmaster, and you play it with 10mm miniatures, so it's different than SBG and WotR.

Well, it's not really alternative figures per se...

The Battle of 5 Armies is a stand alone game that consists of strips of 10mm models, much like GW's Warmaster game on which it is based.

Post subject:  another box similar to moria or not ?

i found on a site -- a box called the return of the ring strategy battle game---

relive the battles and adventures of the The Return of The King with The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King battle game - a tabletop strategy game for two or more players. In this box, you'll find a rulebook, dice, plastic runis of Middle-earth and 48 highly detailed plastic miniatures - the ideal way to start or continue your The Lord of The Rings collection.

It contains a 176-page full-color rulebook, 48 highly detailed plastic miniatures, (24 Warriors of Minas Tirith and 24 Mordor Orcs), ruins of Middle-earth, and dice.

it seems like some kind of starters kit to ? -- or is it different from the mines of moria --- do you get the regular rulebook ??? ... :? :?

Found another box --- the two towers strategy battle game

Relive the battles and adventures of the The Two Towers with The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers battle game - a tabletop strategy game for two or more players. In this box, you'll find a rulebook, dice, and 32 highly detailed plastic miniatures - the ideal way to start or continue your The Lord of The Rings collection.

It contains a 160-page full-color rulebook, 32 highly detailed plastic miniatures, (12 Riders of Rohan and 20 Fighting Uruk-hai), a ruined building, and dice.

Both of those sets are great as far as models go, but you will probably need the most recent rule book, which can only be found in Mines of Moria and as a stand-alone hardcover.

garmenhord. they were the starter sets in production prior to the mines of moria set. they were released in film order.

Its a good set, but remember they aren't the newest rules available. so expect a few changes.

I suggest, if your a beginner and interested in painting and modelling, you should start out with this:

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1620029&prodId=prod1095435

Or this, although it includes Foundation Paints which are used more often in Warhammer but still can be used in LotR:
