I have just received a message from someone saying they have 'all the accounts of your forum..if you want to talk to me send an email to (email address supplied)' I am sorry everyone, but the world seems filled with [word deleted] like this who just Devlan Mud all over everything and think it's funny. It might take me a bit of time to fix this, in the meantime, I urge everyone to change their password here and any other site where you use the same login/password combination. |

What is it with these [word deleted]? Is there anyway to trace it back and let the cops know? |

I'm backing everything up now - just done the database and am in the process of doing the site code. So if things are going slow, then sorry, but be patient please. As for the cops - well, no one has actually done anything malicious yet as far as I can see, so I doubt the cops would give a [word deleted]. But I'll call them tomorrow and see what they're prepared to do. The threatening tone of the PM is genuinely concerning me. |

Unfortunately the world is full of t***s with nothing better to do than [word deleted] everyone else off! Hopefully it doesn't cause many problems, good luck Daggy with the back-up. |

23000 files, almost 1GB of data to download. This is going to take me all night. And that's just the start of the process. |

Sad what some people will do for no good reason. btw, I think this is the thread with the most 'word deleted' things in it I have ever seen. |

Raukov, yes. I have enough reason to believe that this person has what he says he has. The scary thing with this is that he could probably crack people's passwords, which has serious ramifications for everyone here. |

Shall I change my password every other week or something, or won't it make much difference? What dya mean btw when you say you have reason to believe him, just curious. cheers mate James |

I think it's both frightening and saddening that some arrogant man or woman, albeit with some rather impressive computer skills, indubitably procured whilst living in some basement or other, eating pizza, is threatening to take away our little alcove on the internet. I just don't understand why some people see the need to bother others in this manner. I try to think it's for some saddening need for attention, some grasp of power which they so desperately try to achieve IRL, but obviously fail, and thus see it as a must to bother other people, most likely halfway across the world. This sickens me. |

True, the world is full of weirdoes like people who program viruses or torture small animals, what annoys and sickens the rest of the world somehow must make sense to them |

I doubt that this person developed the skills to hack a website on their own. There are step-by-step instructions available on the web for doing this sort of thing and anyone with basic skills (and moral bankruptcy) can do it. So, how do I know this hacking attempt is genuine? Because the PM I got was from a user account that hasn't logged in since 2004 and belongs to someone I know. To fix this properly, I am going to have to install the latest version of phpBB and import the whole forum database over. This will mean a number of things:
But the upside of doing this will be a much more robust security system, a more flexible forum structure with better features, better moderation tools, and a few other things too. I'll give people plenty of warning before I make a start on it though, so don't panic. |

Thanks for the heads up Alan. I've got an article that has been accepted but pending final approval, should I make a copy of the article on my comp just in case or will it get saved with the rest of the data? Cheers. |

O, this is getting to mutch... My pizza is coming out... Raggbur EDIT: Hey! It's not me! Everyone can eat pizza on a Sunday evening... I think what Alan meant was that the numbnut who hacked the site used the account of someone that Alan knows would not do such a thing, therefore it's a genuine threat. |
