I just read this little tidbit on the net:

GW have the licences for the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings extended for 5 years.

Well i have read it too just now and its from a valid source (can never be 100% sure tho) and looks like it is true :D

If this is true, maybe we will see another "One Book to Rule The All" with all the profiles updated, and maybe a few more from the literary license that has never been released. They did this after The Lords of the Rings films and had plans for more literary releases that were probably scrapped when they acquired The Hobbit film license.

Maybe this means Huorns, wearwolves, beornings, and characters such as Queen Breuthiel.

If what you are referring to is the link below, then remember this is from 2011, which means we already knew this information. The license expires in 2017

The 'source' has been relatively reliable regarding the other GW game systems from what I can tell (not perfect mind you, but not bad).

Funny, I have a single large binder with every single profile in it, it is about 3" thick (though the pages are in plastic protectors). It would be a very heavy tome indeed unless they print small. I would be more apt to think they would re-issue the 5 books with all the profiles they intend to ever have in them. Then a book for hobbit profiles perhaps.

I do hope they keep making more models and not just with holding the rights from competition.

They've already said they will be rereleasing the Sourcebooks as digital books

I think this is also really important because it means its WORTH the money for them to do this which means more kits more than likely.

When did they say that?

These rumours sound great :D !

However, they are only rumours.

@SouthernDunedain: I think that GW never said this, it's just a very popular rumour.

This confuses me. I don't see them amping up their support for the hobby, the time to do that was 2012. Then again what's the point in shelling out for a licence if you don't expect a return?

What is interesting, if you read the early financial reports from when tey started LOTR, they had only bought that to keep others from using it against them and it made them way more money than they expected so they amped up the marketing. This time around they are letting the market ride on it's own. But they may still only be extending the license just to keep one of these newer companies from cashing in ontop of the hard work they already did on models in the market.

Or it's just to sell off as much stock as possible in the next five years so they aren't sitting on a bunch of product they can't sell.

One worrying bit of news from an exceptionally reliable 40k/WFB source is that a rumoured 30k/Horus Heresy range will be replacing LotR on the shelves, and LotR will be going Direct Only across the whole range.

I think it's safe to assume that 30k could/will have a different game mechanic to 40k, or it would be pretty pointless as a standalone game. Hence the reason that some boxes will contain rules for both 30 & 40k (if the rules weren't different they'd only include 1 set of rules.

It's not however a safety net for WFB, it's a replacement for lotr/hobbit on the shelves as AFAIK all of this is going direct only

Now as a 30k fan I am quite excited about this, but I would hate to see LotR go direct only (especially as the discount resellers are the only way I can stomach Hobbit prices!)

Even if this is just a rumour, it's brilliant if it's true.

Doesn't the licence also mean they have to produce a certain amount of minis each year?

I also heard something like this, but I am not sure if it is true.

One thing I don't understand is the WH and WH40k players pretentiousness.
I'm saying this because of the comments on the natfka link...

Especially considering how they get something basically every month, whereas we get 2 maybe 3 releases a year.
