A Polish company called Unreleased Miniatures has just started releasing pics of their new fantasy range, which looks like it could be LOTR standins. Their first release a mounted Forlong the Fat (or as they call him, ' Fat Medieval Bismarck on horse) makes me quite eager to see more! :)

A German company called Ridgeback Miniatures is also stepping into the breach it would seem. I genuinely think that if GW doesn't pick up the ball on this one, the fan community will take up the model production/rules writing, in the same way Elfball evolved.

Interesting. I think we will see more of this sort of thing. Generic bearded fantasy heroes etcetera are not copyright :)

Unreleased just released (no pun intended) pictures of another model, the 'Absolutely Random Dwarf Lord on Foot'.

So generic you can even see the white tree on Bismark.

I'm all for the new minis, they look superb. My only concern is ordering from a bunch of small companies. I'm hoping a reputable seller will pick them up.

Nothing wrong with small companies.

Indeed, smaller companies will inevitably be the place to look to moving forward.
As one myself, I have noticed that there are now several smaller sculptors effectively trying to fill holes and working on exactly the same things, competing in what is essentially a very small market. So there will be two or three 'Dwarf Lords' for example to choose from. Good news for the consumer, as they will now have options, plus a bit of friendly competition helps raise the standard of the sculpting, as each sculptor is forced to come up with something more attractive than his competitors efforts.

The only thing I dislike about that "Dain" impostor above is his raised arm. Something about his wrist guard and elbow area looks slightly off. Like the guard is too big and his arm too skinny. Or maybe it's just the angle. I would still get him, especially if metal and not resin.

Who is going to write the rules for these new models? What happens if those rules are not balanced? Will the models just copy previous stats? I am all for getting these models but it is a delicate job to get the stats and special rules right so that the model fits into the army and the game.
Although it is a European based comoany, which for us yanks makes shipping pretty expensive.

^It's a good thing there is already an existing Dain profile.

It would be great if the gaming community forced all the fan sites (One_Ring, TLA) and the major leagues (GBHL, DCHL) to come together, pull the best ideas and most agreed upon stats, and release a Fan Supplement for unreleased miniatures. And this Supplement would be legal for tournament use if found to be fair. And if anybody could make fair stats, it's the fans! We're not out to make overpowering game breaking profiles just so that we can push and sell a new product.

In my I sig you'll find just such a supplement developed on here and DakkaDakka. So far it's proven pretty balanced, a few tweaks still need to be made, but it's serviceable!

^Yep downloaded, thanks. But should the siege troll be given an armour option? He's already at D7 much like an armoured Mordor Troll, so he'll be given D8?

Possibly... Like I say, I do have a list of things to edit, that possibly being one of them. I was waiting (in vain) for any other stuff from GW, but since that's not happening then I will see about sorting the amended version.

Yep. I house ruled the Mordor Troll without crude armor as 90 pts Defense 6 with no crude armour. Because you can see the official profiles that there's no difference between a catapult troll and an armoured troll even though there's a 10 point difference. What's the point of having crude armour if a regular Mordor troll has the same stat lines and is 10 points cheaper? Though he is only a catapult crew option, but that's besides the point.
