So what I mean is painting light onto models clothes and faces. I've recently attempted it, and kinda achieved the affect I wanted, but it's not flawless and I'm sure I could do better.

For example to explain what I mean, a model is holding the object of light (a torch/ firing a fireball). That object is creating light, and so is then reflecting onto the models clothes and face. The model Kardush is firing his fireball, and it would look great reflecting on his hands and face. Same if you had a Saruman firing his fireball, and if Count Dooku used his Force Lightning the light created fom those forces are going to reflect. That's what I'd like to achieve (hoping to get a better effect than my previous "failed" attempt).

Any links, suggestions, examples, tutorials or tips would be helpful, thanks.

The technique you're looking for is called OSL. I have an example in my WIP of Boromir Captain of the White Tower painted in this way. DMS had good advice or Gandlaf can point you to some articles

Also one tip from my own experience is to take a small light and place it at the source of the light and shine it on your model. This way you can realistically determine what areas would be hit by the light and all. That's how I figured it out with my model

I watched a video where a guy dabbed high gloss varnish on certain parts of the model as a very quick and effective way. He also used it very effectively to represent sweat which looked great on horses.
