Post subject: | Painting Horses |
Im going to be repainting all my old horses that I painted two years ago, badly, and I've been wondering how to get the colour variations right. I have no experience with horses, so i couldn't tell you what colour they're supposed to be. I was wondering what base colour you guys work up from and what colours you use to highlight. I've checked the times of Wisdom, and I can't find anything like what I want. Also if anyone of you have similar advice for painting Wargs. Thanks. |

Try and get hold of issue 1 of the SBG magazine that has an artile on painting horses. Its written by a commision painter and looks good. I intend to buy some of the paints he uses , even though i don't use that brand, when I get round to my mounts, (so, so many mounts ) . |

Not just any commission painter - it's our very own DMS! Although he's not all that if you ask me… If you want to give the guide a look then have a looksee in my signature and all shall be revealed. |

Thanks for the link, but it's not really what I'm looking for. I don't want to know how to paint horses, I want to know what colours work best on horses. |

Horses can be black through grey to white, and all the different shades of brown. With and browns and whites I usually basecoat the horse then give it a shading with a suitable wash, then I layer with the basecoat colour and highlight with a slighting lighter colour. With blacks and greys it is usually better to basecoat with black or dark grey, then layer and highlight successively adding more white and finish off with a black wash. Elrohir |

While that is helpful Elrohir, it's really GW colour names that I want - the base colour and the highlight. |

I have painted grey horses in the manner recommended in the new "How to Paint Citadel Minis" and have had great success with them in Rohan, Minas Tirith and Haradrim armies. The following is from a WD monthly article on Easterlings from about the time WotR was released with the plastic kataphracts: Undercoat: black Basecoat: scorched brown wash: devlan mud layer: scorched brown highlight: 1:1 scorched + bestial brown extreme highlight: 1:1 dark flesh + bleached bone I like to thin the last two layers. Tabletop fantastic! and my guests never say anything bad about the ones in the display cabinet. |

Here are some ideas to get you started, just experiment with them to suit with your own taste! Dark Brown Horse Basecoat with Rhinox Hide Shade with Agrax Earthshade Layer with Rhinox Hide Highlight with Doombul Brown Light Brown Horse Basecoat with Mournfang Shade Agrax Earthshade Layer Mournfang Brown Highlight with Balor Brown Grey Horse Bascoat Mechanicus Standard Grey Shade Nuln Oil Layer Mechanicus Standard Grey Highlight Dawnstone Black Horse Basecoat Abbadon Black Highlight Mechanicus Standard Grey Fine Highlight Dawnstone Shade Nuln Oil I haven't had too much experience, but I just stick with the basic colours. For white horses, you could use DMS's scheme in the SBG magazine. Hope this helps! Elrohir |

pg 23 RotK Journey book, Knights of Minas Tirith: All from black basecoat. These use the old color names, just use the handy Citadel Conversion Chart to translate them for today's modern painter. Horse 1 scorched brown dark flesh 1:1 dark flesh+bleached bone Horse 2 1:1 scorched brown+chaos black scorched brown 1:1 scorched brown+dark flesh Horse 3 1:1 bestial brown+chaos black bestial brown vermin brown A lovely set of minimalist chestnuts or bays using only a handful of paints. Great for those just starting in the range, as grey, silver, flesh and gold complete the Minas Tirith palette. |
