Post subject:  MESBG Painting Guide - Uruk Hai warrior

Hi all, I've finally given in to the community and have set up a patreon page for a monthly Middle-earth painting guide. The first guide is going to be an Uruk hai warrior with a bonus guide added for Lurtz. These guides will be going live on patreon on October 2nd. Although I have had to charge a little to produce the guides I have set the price per guide at the very minimum I can of $1 USD per guide. (i wish I could continue to write them for free but work at Shadow & Flame has just become too intensive over the last few years. For more information or to sign up here is the web address

Good luck with the new project DMS, glad you gave in.. but I think you just found the only thing that is more time consuming than miniature painting, video editing :P

Keep it up :yay:

Very exciting news ! One of the best miniature painters I've ever seen willing to share tips and step-by-step guides for LOTR and Hobbit models with mediocre amateurs like myself ? Yes please !

I'll be signing up for sure...

Awesome guide DMS :yay:
Well written, easy to follow and lots of info.
My only suggestion would be to keep the backround you had in the last pictures, I find my eyes focus too much on the white and the other colours get a little lost..
Keep it up 8)

Shoot the guides on black background you think ?
I would actually prefer that.

I think that grayish/black makes for a neutral contrast backround and you can see better both the lighter and the darker colours on the mini.
Try opening a SBG magazine guide on one half of the screen and the uruk guide on the other half, and compare.

In my eyes, black backround works better. But that's just my opinion so maybe put a poll for patrons etc, see what people like best, just in case.

I agree with you and much prefer the black which is why I shoot all my models on the black background. I'm not sure what made me go with the white tbh.

I've already finished Octobers Lurtz guide on white but I'll do Novembers on black and then ask patrons what they want going forward. Good call. Cheers.

Well you never know unless you try it.. An off-white might be good if the mini is very black for a better definition on edges.
The eye focuses on intense areas, hence I found mine giving too much attention on the pure white, while on a more muted backround it clearly focuses on the mini. I'm not an expert myself, and fine arts, let's say it's not my field :P

You could probably use some image editing software, choose the white part and give it a more grayish colour probably.
It's gonna be a cool guide in white too, so no worries 8)
