They're awesome against a troll because they can't be barged, hurled or rended! The spear gets +1 to wound against monsters too!
Against the horse charge they're pretty good because the defence 9 is so tough and they get the two dice for the duel roll-off (one for the shield, one for the spear). To be honest, the biggest threat from cavalry is their ability to come around "the back" and just attack the spear dwarf (though they still have 6 defence!)
In this mission I kept the spear in the middle of three shield dwarves (one vault warden shield, two normal shields) and that seemed to work really well.
