Post subject: | Paint-Off Planning Thread |
Greetings, everyone. So, I was reading another thread and the idea of a paint-off was raised. This sparked an idea, which is as follows: We would collectively decide on a miniature to paint together. We then set a deadline to have the model completed. This would help keep us motivated and create some shared experiences. Personally, I love the idea of the To9G, but I don't have the time or financial resources to participate at that scale. This would be a much smaller commitment, but would still allow us to participate in something together. Obviously, we would mostly focus on heroes, and not everyone would particpate every time, but I think this could be a lot of fun. We could even have a vote at the end (probably just for bragging rights or maybe a couple of Gold Coins). I'm just throwing ideas around. Let me know what you guys think. If everyone is game, we could probably start one for the month of December. Some possible minis that I could tackle this month are: --Shade --Buhrdur or a Cave Troll --Ent --Gandalf the Grey (Mounted) I'm also open to other ideas. |

I've seen something like this take place on a painting forum only there it's called a Painting Deathmatch. Sounds like a great idea to hold them here if you ask me. I won't participate this month as Lucius is probably going to take me the majority of the month but I'd be willing to have a shot come the new year |

Excellent idea! With TO9G next year I doubt I'll personally have the time to participate much in this, but if any Isengard minis come up I'll try and move them round in my army list. |

Hey Jonathan, I love this idea, and was actually considering something similar. I just sent you a PM regarding this. Hope a painting competition can get off the ground, as I would love to take part. |

Terrific idea. I love it. I'd definitely try and do it. I'm thinking an ent would be awesome. Let me know when this is going to take place. So, basically, we all get the same miniature and try to paint it by the deadline? Or maybe I misread (I seem to have done that a lot lately) Maybe, instead of a specific miniature, a specific realm and type for each month? I.E. Wood Elf hero of your choice for Month X, Mordor Monster for Month Y, Isengard hero for month Z, etc. Just an idea. |

Personally I think sticking with Jonathans idea is better. If everyone paints the same miniature it'd be easier and a lot more interesting to compare the differences of colour scheme and painting talents. Just a personal preference though. |

Well, you do have a point there... |

Actually, that was part of the idea. I really enjoy seeing how different people treat the same model, and I've always thought it would be neat to see how others approach the same model I'm working on. It would also make it easier to judge if we decide to have a vote at the end. |

I think it'd be nice to have a freindly voting at the end, would perhaps encourage others to do a better job on the model |

In that case, I expect to lose, quite badly...... Hopefully the competition won't just be voted on on how good the paint job is, because if so, I think I know who's going to win every time....., and it ain't me I'm assuming the vote will also be based on originality of paint scheme, etc? |

I really love the idea of rewards, and I think they'll help to motivate a lot of people. It's also not all about winning, Anduril. Part of the fun is simply taking part in a fun compettition with your friends. I'm sure a lot of great work will come out of it. |

Yes, that's the idea. Actually, ideally, the vote would be based on who you think most deserves to win. This could be because it was the best painted, most original, most improved... This would allow everyone to have a chance of winning. |

I like it that way. If someone has really improved their painting or worked very hard on a particular miniature then they should be rewaded as such. It would make it a much more friendly and fair competition. |

I'm quite aware of that. I wasn't concerned about the winning. Heck, here in Texas we have a state fair every year. You can enter scale models in their competitions. I've competed every year for the last five years. Three of those I didn't win a thing, but I still had a blast making my entry. I've never been big about the whole winning thing. If I came across as saying, "How on earth am I supposed to win this? Man, I won't compete if I can't win!" sorry, I didn't mean to. |

No need to apologise, Anduril. Looking back on this page, I'm not totally conviced everyone should paint the same miniature. It'd be hard to cordinate everyone to paint the same one, not everyone would have that miniature at the time, and they may not intend to purchase it otherwise. That would require them to purchase a minature that they may not get any use out of. It seems like it'd be a little restricting on people who don't have a lot of models... Just a suggestion really, what do you guys think? |

I think everyone doing the same miniature (or perhaps some version of the same character) would make judging much easier, but as you say, it would mean that some couldn't participate every month. I can go either way. What does everyone think? This was also partially inspired by a series that Tidoco hosted a while back in which we all painted a miniature along with him. I remember doing a WoMT and a RoR. It was kind of fun seeing everyone post how they were doing at each stage. |

I think it'd be best to paint different miniatures. IMHO, it would be a little too restrictive on who could take part, and to me a major strength of this sort of project would be the ease of taking part in it. It might also get slightly repetitive to see the same miniature, if we were to paint an armored Faramir model you'd end up with a lot of similar looking models. If someone wanted to paint the model unique, they might end up with a model that does not match their army. There are not many Gondorians painted orange. This is just my opinion though, and I'm very open to hear anyones argument for painting the same miniature. |

I'd have to go with Josh on this, I have a backlog of...err...approximately 15 LOTR miniatures. And since my supplier has a set shipping cost of $12.00, I'd have to pay that to order a new miniature even if the miniature only cost me $9.00. Although, if we stuck to miniatures with a variety of paint schemes--I.E. wood elves, mordor units, etc. it might help remove the problem of seeing 15 different entries that look exactly the same. |

I personally much prefer the idea of everyone painting the same miniature (or at least different versions of the same miniature). Sure it'd take a little trial and error to find a miniature that a few people all have and the mini shouldn't really be too large/expensive as people will sometimes go out and buy a model simply so that they can participate but I do feel that it'd make the whole idea much more interesting and unique. Otherwise it's just a series of standard monthly competitions. |
