Me and Ruffnut believe that the Mirkwood palace guards are too expensive as they don't actually need all those rules increasing their already night courage, it makes them slightly unplayable. Any thoughts on a more suitable cost?

Are you basing your thoughts on their original cost or their new cost in There and Back Again? Originally they were certainly too expensive, but I think now they are fairly costed. Although you need to keep them near Thranduil to get the best value from them.

Original, I'm not a big fan of there and back again.

Why don't you like There and Back Again?

You cannot simply ignore the There and Back again supplement. The new rules for the model concerned are in there, and all older versions of this profile are out of date. The Middle Earth team clearly recognised that the Palace Guard were overcosted, as you said, and have ammended their original mistake in the TABA supplement.

A Palace Guard is an elf (typically 7pts) with heavy armor (+2pts) and an elf blade (+1pt), so before special rules you'd be expecting to pay about 10pts for one. If you were running a Rivendell force you would pay 10pts for one.

Even if you're using the TABA profile you're paying 2pts for bodyguard and a situational +1F. That seems like a bad trade to me. Yes, bodyguard is great, but not for C5 elves. Yes, +1F is often worth a point, but 3" isn't very far and F5 is already very high. 12pts isn't crazy, but I'd prefer them at 11pts or with a better radius on the King's Guard rule or both.

14pts is a no question, it's dramatically too high. Using the most recent and official rules is important for tournaments, leagues, and anywhere else people have to come together on a consistent understanding of the rules, but if you prefer Desolation of Smaug you're obviously free to do whatever your opponent agrees to. I would have no objection to house ruling Palace Guard to 12pts even if we were going to generally use the Desolation profiles.
