I watched the new DOS yesterday and i'm not sure if this is a stupid question. I saw a few people talking about it, what was so significant about Legolas getting a nosebleed. I don't know if i missed anything but to some other people this seemed to be a really big thing, can someone explain why?

It is the first injury ever inflicted upon the deadly Prince of Mirkwood. So now he is a bit miffed, and is determined to have revenge upon Bolg.

It shows he isnt immortal? He got smacked around quite a bit by Bolg, so I guess it's to show he can die, like anyone else.

That's what they done to Haldir anyway. (Killing him off I mean) But I'm guessing it is to show that immortals can be hurt like any other.

I was watching the film with my wife and as soon as I saw the nosebleed I was like "there's Legolas' first drawn blood in all the movies".

I like that they had that for the more observant movie-goers

Getting his butt kicked by Bolg kinda tempered my frustration with how he ninja-style hacks his way trough dozens of Orcs with ease. It doesn't really add up to all the acrobatics and improbable decapitation of Fimbul however... still ridiculous :)

Besides the point about his own mortality, it could also be a new found respect for the mortals he thought himself so above #foreshadowinglotr

1. Legolas had a few injuries in LotR at Amon Hen and I think Helm's Deep, although those of course are after the Hobbit.
2. The ninja scenes were awesome and rather accurate to the book. Legolas could walk on snow without leaving footprints, so I think him being able to jump around and plough through orcs with no problem is accurate to how elves were supposed to be.

For me, that blood symbolises how Legolas, and all Elves of Middle-Earth in fact, can die. Reading the books, and watching the films, it becomes obvious that the idea of 'immortality' in Middle-Earth only immortalises a being's natural life. The immortal beings in Middle-Earth can die in various ways - murder, illness, suicide, etc - they are just simply immortal in terms of aging, so perhaps a more appropriate term, rather than 'immortal' would be 'ageless'.

Yeah I saw it as a way to emphasise what a hard-case Bolg was; you've seen Leggy happily cutting his way through dozens of orcs in this film and, of course, the audience know him from all his heroics in LOTR so to show he had such trouble with Bolg makes you realise what a powerful orc he is.

I thought that was a great fight, it felt very 'real' for a CGI character and had a real sense of jeopardy to it. I almost forgot that Leggy survives to LOTR and was getting worried about him. You can never shake that knowledge entirely though so I really hope for the big showdown in TABA it's Bolg fighting Tauriel so the audience really doesn't know what will happen as either/both could die.

Major Part III Spoiler - don't open if you haven't read the book!

If Tauriel (or Legolas for that matter) steals Beorn's kill on Bolg I'll never forgive PJ. Ever.

A huuuge werebear, ripping Bolg and his guard apart like butter... really, who would prefer yet another Orc vs. some Elf chick choreo-fest instead of that bundle of awesome? :P Mind you, I wouldn't mind Bolg finishing her off before meeting the Great Furry One...
