Anyone got a good guide to painting horses? I've got 12 kataphrakts to paint and GW's all black scheme is unrealistic and boring. Anyone?

Yeah page 23 of a realy long thread. "Watcher in the water" was it called? I know because i looked at it alot.

Most of the horses of the metal Kataphrakts are brown not black, See Shadow in the East.

But all the new ones are black, so are the Khandish horses.

It doesn't have to be the colour GW recommends.
For the Kataphrakts I would look into medieval warhorses.
(google it or look on wikipedia)

My recipe for brown horses is:
* Undercoat black
* Coat Scorched brown
* Highlight Bestial brown
* Final Highlight Vermin brown

The manes are black/grey or light brown/yellowish

Black horses are easier:
* Undercoat black
* highlight 80% black 20% codex grey
* highlight 50% black 50% codex grey
* highlight 75% black 25% codex grey
* final highlight codex grey

White horses:
* undercoat black
* coat Adeptus battlegrey
* highlight Fortress grey
* thin coats of Skull White

Paint the socks in different colours (if you want socks).

Wow, just in time. I have 21 kataphrakts primed, but not painted yet. I am still undecided about the Dragon upgrade. Thanks for posting this topic and the helpful replies.
