After seeing Thranduil in the movie I bought my first individual mini in over 4 years. The paint job is daunting to me though. I'm pretty confident in that I could get the grey tones, skin tones, everything just about right, but how on earth do I add the little white dots on the clothing like GW did in their show model? And how do I make it looks just a bit shiny?

One thing I did to make shiny cloth before was to paint and highlight the cloth as normal and then make a VERY diluted wash of Mithril Silver and go over the cloth. I did this to differentiate "elven" cloaks from standard ones. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics handy, but it's a fairly simple technique and should be easy to test out.

I think if you are to do this then a glaze medium would help. It would keep the pigment together and therefore spread the metallic look evenly across the area.

I mixed a bit of Ironbreaker into each layer of the cloak, until the final highlights were all Ironbreaker. Followed by a very slight blue wash, it gives it a shiny look without being metal. Almost all of my elven cloth is done this way, at least for wealthy elves in finery. Wood elves tend not to have it, no does anyone wearing 'rough' or 'traveling' style clothes.

The wash method above is also a good one.
