after reading this article, i still don't understand the black lining thing, does anybody think they can explain that to me? Also how will it help me in my painting?

If you look at the above photo of the great job done by agincourt, then you will notice a black / dark line between each area - it stands out most between the leather head collar and the white head of the horse.
This helps create the difference between the areas.
Look also at the very fine black line between the hilt and blade of the sword. There is a very fine dark line between the blue belt and the grey coat and so on and so on.

Does that give you the idea ?

Like I say it helps create a clear defining line between areas of colour. If you look at some top figures, they all have it. As the more advanced the painting gets the more subtle they become, but they are still there. Never have a colour flush up against another.

here is an example
the armor on the leg area of a galadhrim warrior, you know how there are rungs(kind of), anyway they go all the way down, this was kind of hard to explain.

i have been looking at pics and should i do a thin line between each piece of armor, to give it depth, and when should i do that, before or after putting on a gyprohne sephia wash?

IMO a shadow shouldn't be black as real dark areas aren't often like that unless the actual colours are quite dark.

that's what i do because our armor paint scheme looks similar

i do use a very similar scheme.
for armour, i paint several thin layers of shining gold, followed by gryphonne sepia, then devlan mud. i then drybrush it 50:50 chainmail and shining gold and give it a further wash of gryphonne sepia followed by devlan mud.

it sounds long and complex but if you paint them in a batch it doen't take long at all. as you can see, i don't bother going over every plate with a highlight, i just use a drybrush and then a wash to blend it together again.



after reading the comments, this seems to be a technique i have used without knowing. i suppose all i do is work off a black undercoat and leave very thin lines between different areas rather than paint them in.

as for where to do it, i would say only between completely separate 'things' eg between armour, cloak, hair, and skin rather than seperate plates on armour or between strands of hair. here definition will be added with a shade or wash.

i hope i haven't explained that too badly.

whilst on the subject of elves, does anybody think that i should pay £90 for 72 galadhrim infantry, 18 knights, 18 GotGC, 2 galadhrim captains, 24 wood elves, and white council? its a lot of money i know, but in the long run i could save quite a bit. i am stuck.

YES!!!!! take the elves and run! I don't know what the value for british pounds is in terms of models but in australia that 90 pounds is roughly 150 dollars, which is not even enough for two boxes of infantry and knights alone!

i think i just might. normally it would cost £20 for a box of plastics, and £8 for metals, so i would save well over £100. it also includes 24 WoMT, uruk scouts, and men of rohan, which i don't really want but which adds to the saving.

however, do you think then that my army would be too big? i would have:
24 knights
27 guards of the galadhrim court
130 galadhrim warriors
4 galadhrim captains
50 wood elves
100 high elves
looooaads of heroes
ent

and then i have to paint them all.

Well, for one thing, you'd be the envy of many an elf player. Only guys like Dorth or obsessive gamers or people with enough money to burn as fuel have those kinds of armies.

In regard to the painting issue, I think it's great that you would have "looooaads of heroes" because heroes are always fun to paint!!

Also, I think if you had this many models, you could really benefit from the method of painting gold armour that I posted on the previous page of this thread. It works SO well and you hardly need to do much highlighting, if any.

...So, that army would be:

three formations of knights, 8 companies each

three companies of GoTGC, plus a couple of spares(perhaps for converting)
SIXTEEN companies of galadhrim warriors
captains, put 'em in whatever formation you like;
6 companies of wood elves
and many, many more....
leaving you to put away the money you saved for later(or to spend on HOBBY)
In the end, it's your decision. Personally I would take them though.

120 Galadhrim Warriors
32 Haldir's Elves
96 Wood Elves

To be honest though, I'm actually ridding myself of some of them (the Metals and a box of Knighs).

finally finished my first batch of ebay-bought elves; two companies of galadhrim guards.

i have started Rumil, and may at some point convert a guard to have a banner.

PS i know they look horrendously bright but thats mainly due to my awful picture taking. the main colour for the cloaks was enchanted blue, not ice blue, as it looks in the photo.
