Post subject:  How to paint wood grain

Hey everyone,

I'm a little confused as to how you get the effect of wood grain on a smooth surface. Is there any technique in particular I should be trying, or any helpful tips to make it easier? I attempted it this mroning and it just looked like some crooked lines painted on, hardly convincing. Any advice or suggestions?

Help would be greatly appreaciated. :)

If the surface is flat you really need to either carve the detail in or just paint a rough 3D grain effect.

This might help. http://blog.brushthralls.com/?page_id=2670

But have in accound that trees are not made of plank boards, so its not the exact same thing.

What are you making? I gave my Bilbo an actual wood floor to make sure I got the grain right. Any time you can, I would recommend putting balsa or bass wood onto a surface and painting that instead of trying to bake a believable pattern without it.

I'm not making anything actually, I'm trying to paint the wooden areas on my Morannon Orc Commanders. :)

Thanks again for the help guys. 8)

Ahh... Yes, that would be difficult.
I don't know... There used to be an article on it on TLA, but I haven't been there since before the big shift.
There is a bit on it here in the part on painting the back of the WoMT shield, but I don't know if it'll help.

Take a look at the masterclass in the new white dwarf, it has a step-by-step on a woodgrain spearshaft you might find useful.
