I enjoy painting figures. At least, I enjoy painting anything apart from Riders of Rohan. Horses are boring (various shades of brown); green cloaks are boring, brown leather armour or equipment is boring, and they take too long. They're not like painting Uruk-hai, where I did 70 of them in 3 batches, all the same colours and patterns, and ended up with a tough-looking potent force within a week. A block of 12 RoR takes me an age to grind through; if I do them in smaller lots it seems to take just as long, and the backlog nearly sends me mad with horror.

You could say, why not bin the lot and focus on Gondor, or Elves. But then, KoMT are not exactly the most vibrant of figures. Boromir's cool, though.

What do you think is the most boring figure, or troop type?

As for now I will say goblins...
Simple colors, no mixes and very small mini so you must be very careful...

I have to agree that Rohan troops felt like ages for me to complete. I don't even want to touch plastic goblins right now, they don't look all that appealing to paint either.

I can't wait to get to my elves and dwarves though. Elves to me always looks like fun to paint. So far I must say that the miniatures I ever had a great time painting is Boromirs and the Guards of the Fountain Court.

For me it would be a draw between Mordor Orcs and Haradrim, they're bothso common with colours in different areas and it gets so tedius, Easterling and Morannons are muchmore fun,a close second would be Morgul Knights, they're the complete opposite of Orcs & Haradrim, not enough colour!

Boring... morgal knights/black nums.
Most anoying
Metal swan knights mounted

I dont find orcs boring as I either, paint a few browns and greens then dip or wash to finish. No more than an hour for 10-15 models if I can help it (not including undercoat n basing).

Yeh I think your right about the metal mounted swan knights - i'm painting 8 at the moment and theyre not particularly boring but they are the MOST annoying thing i've ever painted to date.

Can honestly say none of them. There are figures that are tough to paint because they are monochromatic but I work in stages whereby I dont need to mix too much paint up and buy tints of the same colour. Hence if I get bored, I put the mini down and walk away without worrying about having to mix up another batch of paint. That said, the thought of painting another uruk is a factor that needs the application of either beer or coffee to get me through

Various shades of brown? That covers a huge amount of realistically painted LotR models.

With Riders of Rohan (or any force), you have a huge choice when it comes to painting just brown horses -

Browns, Dark Bays, Light Bays, Chestnuts, Bright Chestnuts, Golden Chestnuts, Liver Chestnuts, Sorrel Chestnuts, Red Roans, Pintos, Appaloosas...

That's before you consider different socks, faces, markings, different shades of brown for each type... Or different base colours.

I'd say the worst possible miniature to paint (for any system) is anything that doesn't inspire you somehow, whether it is the model/rules/colour scheme.

i think it's all about variation - painting the same troops all the time might get boring after a while. Try to add original swings at it will become lots of fun.

Yes, let's all spend tons of money for limited edition frodo, which is limited due to being invisible, and then paint it so that we got a painted frodo miniature...
As on topic, my answer:
for lotr: gobbos! camo green / scab red / boltgun metal / devlad mud - type gobbos!
for 40k: ultramarines are very original and a fun to paint :P

I do have to disagree about the morgul knights (as for rwraiths, I find them really fun to paint. Making the metal and black look more ghosty etc.), and about mordor orcs (you can really play with these guys, I' like it bx. to just completely change my colour scheme when painting one, different reds/browns etc. as long it's dark and muddy, it al looks so orcy, so who cares ?)

I've just recently been painting goblins and must say I now agree that they are horribly boring, although didn't use any red as I want them to be Angmar gobbos, so it's green, black and grey clothing.

I've painted Moria Goblins and had fun, I've painted Warriors of Minas Tirith and had fun. I honestly find it fun to paint any model! It can be one of the most calming or frustrating things to do. Oh my sister has Warriors of Rohan coming so it looks as if we've chosen to paint "boring" armies. We have fun and that's what matters to us :-D
