Post subject:  Éomer, Marshal of the Riddermark (Diorama Project)

Hey Guys,

I recently got purchased an Eomer mounted model and thought that I would like to do a diorama on him. I have some questions I would like to ask you guys before I proceed however.

1. Should I build the diorama on the 'Large Oval Base' from GamesWorkshop, or is it too small and I should build it on something else?
2. My Eomer is missing his horse and I was wondering if there are any places minus eBay in which I can find suitable horses for him?
3. I am unsure whether he should be charging Orcs, Uruk-Hai or even an Isengard Troll, regardless he will be in a battle/charging situation and was wondering which you guys would think would be the best?

If you guys have any other questions that you would like to ask me feel free. Also I need to say that I already have Eomer painted and ready for his mount and I will be gluing them directly onto the large base (won't stay on their singular bases). Also this is a long term project so I won't necessarily be taking the 'bargain route' but it would help and it can be a long term project and I will provide pictures as soon as possible!

NOTE: The Eomer figure I own is the original version, NOT the Marshal of the Riddermark version. I put that in the title just to give Eomer his full title. ;)

Thanks, G.

1. I want it to be a decent size. I want some space for scenery etc.
2. Nevermind, thanks anyway.
3. I amn't really basing it off a scene from the film as that's harder in my opinion and it's only my first diorama.

Thanks for the help. :)

Ok...
So as you add your fantasy if you decide to make Eomer fighting an Isengard troll I suggest his horse to be on a small cliff :-D

Yes, that sounds like a good idea, I will take all suggestions into consideration, :)

I like the idea of a Pelennor diorama. You could Eomer charging a group of Easterlings and Orcs: the Easterlings are standing their ground but the Orcs are fleeing.

If you think you may want to play the model as well, a great option is to make a small display base, perhaps 6"x6" and have cutouts for the game bases for all the involved models. Finish them all with consistent basing and you practically won't notice that the bases are removable (your visual attention will be focused more on the models themselves if nothing distracts you to the base) and yet you can still pull that Eomer you put so much effort into off the diorama and play him when you want.

You can still have a "mini diorama" on the cavalry base itself so even when it's removed it looks good. For example, my Eomer (from ebay) had a broken horse leg, so I'm doing some extra work on the base to make it interesting and hide the repair work I'm doing on the leg. With some similar work on the other models in his Command Company they could sit on a display base and look like they were part of a bigger scene.

This method also gives you some extra space for the diorama since you have enough room several models on display and can still add terrain and filler details on the diorama board around them.
