Ok this might seem like a daft question but.... If the army of the dead are spirits and there swords etc are all coloured the same as their skin, clothes etc ie spirit-like then why would their chainmail be silver ? Would it not be the same colour as the rest of the model? Need help quick as I'm fast approaching the point where I am going to have to make the decision as to whether or not to go with the spirit-like colour or the silver... Help appreciated.

Well, the correct word for this is the freedom of the art.
You could color your ghosts as you want, doesnt matter. If you want to use chamnail, your choice. I have spirits unpainted, and I also thinking about how to paint them. Probably I wont use metal paints. I will try to paint everything with the shades of the green.

I want to add some fog under them also, like on this picture.

I always like to paint all the cloths of the dead in the original color (exept for skin) and then just drybrush some white and do a green ink wash.

Thanks for all the help guys - I've kept the dead's chainmail the same colour as there clothing after all their armour is ghostly too. Pics in my WIP today some time :)

EDIT : 2moro ( bad light ) :(

I painted the chainmail metallic because I was afraid the paint scheme I chose was too statuesque, and I didn't want them to appear as if made of stone.

I know where your coming from with that mate - I was having the same thought but a wash with a heavily diluted fortress grey and camo green sorted it.

I searched after pics of ghosts.
Here they are green with a little color.

Here they are white and yellow, it is pretty interesting.

Green again. I think if you are a ghost, and you are transparent, your armour and metal dont shine, so I think the nonmetal painting is the good solution for here.

I dont like the daylight ghost version, it is too green.

The fog is nice, but the green is sh1t.

Here also.

This is a very nice paint style. I like the green lights.

Boring colors again.

I really like this, the wall effect is very great idea. I think I will use this ;)

I really like the "Through The Wall" guys. I never thought of that one.
Here's the Angmar ghost army I put together. It may be hard to tell (I really wanted them to look like they were coming out of mist, so perhaps overdid it on the cotton fog), but they're painted blue with their "in life" colors coming through.

I wish the shot had a better view on the one with no left arm. I gave him a nice, ghostly clavicle bone to emphasize that it's missing.

 Ha ha ha that made me laugh.
I experimented a little with the cotton wool fog idea on my army of the dead but couldn't make it look authentic like in the pictures in this thread. Don't suppose theres any particular way of doing it is there? sticking it and making it stay where I wanted it was the problem

I don't know about the other guys, but I use my "painting knife" to tease it into the shape I want.
Don't let the name scare you, though. It's a sewing needle glued into an old paintbrush handle.

Other than the tool choice, just use a glue you're happy with when you put it down (I went with Locktite superglue) and keep experimenting until you're happy with the results.
