Post subject:  Making Bases?

Hi all
I have recently purchased 8 spare horses for converting but none of them come with bases.
Has anybody got exerience in making bases or suggestions on how to make them.
I was thinking possibly making them out of wood or plastic.
Any ideas?

It may not be cost effective to make them yourself if you don't have the tools.
This link for cost of wood bases http://www.litko.net/
I make them several different ways but I have a drill press.
A hole saw is one option. The closest I can find to 40mm is 1 1/2 inch. Not enough difference to notice but a bit small for the WOTR trays. You can just manage this with a hand held power drill if you clamp the wood down. Remember to drill all the way through in to a scrap piece to avoid tear out.

This circle cutter for larger bases and displays http://compare.ebay.com/like/2907013929 ... s&var=sbar
the circle cutter is better because it can be adjusted to40mm http://www.amazon.com/Empire-Level-2799 ... B001DZEEZS

I have used paper and balsa wood for bases. The balsa is to soft and the paper looks bad after a short time. If you are going to take time to make nice bases it is silly to use inferior materials. So use a very good grade of 1/8 or 1/4 plywood.

I've tried with a hole cutter on mdf and plywood, and it's not accurate enough to look good. In this case, it's really better to just save up and spend the money.

For larger bases you might be OK just sawing and sanding something to the right size (and the dodgy edges could be covered with a bit of rock or vegetation), but for 40mm's you'd spend an age and end up with something that looks tatty and mis-shapen.

to avoid "dodgy" edges  Image
I agree for 8 bases I would buy the laser cut wood 8)
10 40mm round with heavy duty magnetic bottoms for $3.74 for 100 $19
