Hey, can someone take some pictures of the backs of khandish warriors? I specifically want to know how the flags are attached to the warriors. I looked on the internet, but couldn't find any close-ups of their back/banner area. This would be very helpful for my current project. (convert WF persians into khandish warriors) Thanks |

A peg on the staff is plugged into a hole in the back. For figure conversion you would need to make a harness to hold the banner staff. |

Okay, so it's basically a quiver that the flagpoles come out of. Thank you. |

And yes, that paintjob is great; I especially like the blue, but man, that freehand is good too. |

The back banners only really make sense in the context of their Japanese Samurai-inspired designs. Tolkien's Khandish are hinted as being more Norse or Anglo-Saxon (if indeed the name "Variag" is intended as an etymological nod to the Varangian Guard of Byzantium.) The Japanese inspiration is seemingly a GW invention, probably to differentiate them sufficiently from the Rohirrim and the then-upcoming book based Dunlendings. |

True, but I'm not a huge stickler for 'true to the books' vs 'true to Tolkien' figures, as some others are. Imo it will just be easier if I put on the banners, as then they are instantly recognizable as khandish warriors. (Though I don't play with anyone but family at the moment, and can't play in GW with these non GW figures, so maybe it doesn't matter.....) Or maybe I'll just have the chieftens have them.....Hmmm, something to think about. |

Well, certainly you're a good enough painter to do some really striking freehand on the back banners. With 120 of them though, it may be more trouble than it's worth. You'll likely end up spending more money on the banners than you did on the figures. Just the Chieftains seems like a reasonable compromise, considering there ought to be ~10 of them to lead the 120 troops! |

Just the Chieftains seems like a reasonable compromise, considering there ought to be ~10 of them to lead the 120 troops! My plan is actually to do 45 mounted warriors and 3 mounted chiefs, and then half that in foot soldiers, and the 3 chiefs on foot. The rest of the persian figures will be converted into other guys. (At least that's the plan for now. If I don't feel like I can make those other conversions work, I might convert up some more to be khandish warriors so I can have a foot army too. (I've always wanted an all mounted khandish army, so that's the main goal right now.)) Oh, and thanks re: freehand, though I think you're over-estimating my painting prowess! I've never done freehand before, and I'm not very good with coming up with artistic (freehand) designs on my own, so that's another reason why I'm undecided on the banners....I will split up the 45 guys into bands of 15, each led by a cheiften, each with a different colour scheme, to fit the mercenaries scheme better. |

Why not 48 and 4 Chieftains to align with the Warband rules? |

Right now we do not play with warband rules, and I don't think khandish mercenaries are even in the warband rules. Because it's just friendly games, if we do switch over to the warband rules at some point, I plan on seeing if we can just make an exception and have 15 guys in the mercenary warbands. (though a couple or even three will flee anyways...) |

But the mercenary sellsword rule doesn't exist in Warbands. |

They're listed as Khandish Warriors and have the boosted attirbutes that the old Mercenaries did. They don't have a chance of running away, and they're costed appropriately. |
