The Hobbit models review thread

Thought I'd make a thread for anyone to give opinions on any hobbit mini's, hopefully it should help people to make up their minds on wether to buy things or not. Please feel free to post your opinions.

Escape from Goblin Town (lmt. edition)

Thorin's company.
Really really chuffed with these guys. The detail is some of the best I have seen, GW seems to have really upped their game (especially comparing to the Mines of Moria set). I found that they were very well produced and there were very few mold lines and clever mold-making uses them to make the details looks sharper, great improvement in this area. I did find some of the dwarf's arms quite hard to put on (mostly Oin and Dwalin). Also on Dwalin I needed to uses a little green stuff bridge some gaps in the fur.
Overall: excellent.

Radagast.
Even greater detail than Thorin's company, really very good. Again I used a little green stuff to fill gaps (of which there were few) and again there were miniscule amounts of mold lines. I found one of the sticks on the base quite hard to glue on as it was in quite an awkward position.
Overall: extra excellent, very very good

Goblins.
I haven't assembled these yet as I intend to sell them but they look like quite good quality.

Scenery.
Again, I havent assembled most of it but it looks like very good detail. The addition of the luggage pile and the weapon pile is a nice touch.

Overall I was very pleased with this set and I was pleasantly suprised at the quality and detail of the miniatures

Thorins Company
Most of them were good. My fili wasnt the greatest, looks like his fingers have molded with his sword. Oin and Dwalin were fiddly to assemble but other than that, s'all good.

Goblins
I like them, few of the poses are wierd but I love grinnah, tiny captain and the Great goblin.

Scenery
Awesome, very good detail and excellent expandability. Just a shame the throne doesnt have a back to it.

Hunter Orcs
Brilliant detail although fiddly to build and posed funny. Some seem to be drawing swords from their knees.

Bolg
Best model IMO so far. Love the detail and a near flawless cast. He is nearly a head taller than most other lotr models without being on a base.

Indeed a very usefull topic! I guess the Bilbo and Gandalf are the same quality as Thorin's Company? I thought I read somewhere Thorin came with an option for the Oakenshield, is this true?

You are correct:Thorin can have either orcrist (2H style) or a strange loking dwarvish sword + the oaken shield
Also Bilbo can have either a walking staff or sting

Is there anything GW can't do with plastic? The minis have brilliant detail, the best plastics I've seen in all GW's range!! Oin and Dwalin were quite tough to assemble though :roll:

No problem

I know, I think the orcrist arms look much better as I dont't like the concept nor the execution of the Oakenshield

No kidding. I noticed that right away. He definitely didn't pop out his leather working tools in the middle of battle "Wait a second, I just need to pop some nice handles on here for myself..... Have some patience, just a little longer..." and then back into the fray.... :roll:

If that happend I would feel sympathy for Azog...
Waiting for Thorin to finish must have been a pain for him. :-D

Nice reviews Master Sid, though I already own evreything that you have showcased. Do you by any chance have reviews of say the Trolls, or some of the other items?

I agree with everything said above regarding Thorin & Co. The Goblins are cool minis, but I've opted to scrape off the excess boils and pustules as I'm not fond of the "Nurgle-esque" diseased appearance. Great Goblin is a lovely model as well. Re: the Oakenshield

I love the Bolg figure. So much so, in fact, that I'm actually considering shelling out for a second so I can arm him with his two swords rather than the mace.

Fimbul to me looks too small when standing side-by-side with plastic Hunter Orcs :-X

Nice idea! The Oakenshield matches the one he carries though, if you happen to notice it has iron spikes attatched as well.

I got the EfGT(LE) and the Flames of War:Open Fire box sets. Then I noticed the boxes were essentially of identical dimensions. Both contain a lot of minis and dice and so forth, but the GW box costs £75 rrp and FOW costs £50 rrp. So I was wondering how could you get an objective comparison of value for money. Then I weighed the boxes with all their contents in situ -
GW: 1.1kg; FOW: 1.8kg.
I like both box sets, but I have to say FOW is better value for money, though my heart lies more with The Hobbit.
