Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could give advice on how to make great bases for miniatures, specifically dwarfs (Thorin's company) but any advice is welcome with open arms. I am raising topic because of the comment monotone left on my wip and I totally agree with him. He gave some great advice but what does everyone else think about basing? Are there any texture paints you would recommend? Do you think I should use static grass or sand?

heres what I do:
1. add sand and a few larger bits of grit to the base using PVA
2. wait for it to dry
3. to make sure it sticks well I use a 50/50 mix of PVA and water and slosh it on top
4. then I painting using one of the schemes below...


rocky paint scheme:
1. adeptus battlegrey base coat
2. adeptus + white 50/50 drybrush


grassy scheme:
1. scorched brown base coat
2. calthan brown drybrush
3. khemri brown drybrush
4. add PVA in patches and apply static grass
5. if I want to use bushes or something, I add them here

The texture paints are quite a good option and get the job done fairly quickly. I'd go for the darkish-brown one (I can't recall the name) as it simulates the look of mud pretty accurately. Then drybrush with a lighter brown and glue a bit of static grass on top in patches and you're rolling. You need to apply two coats of the texture paint for it to add a satisfying texture to the base, though! For my rangers I used this method, let me see if I can find a pic...



It's nothing mind-blowing but I find it to be quite sufficient. It depends on the theme of your models, though...

I agree, you can get some amazinglly good results with a little thought and imagination.
I think the base sets of the figure and is crucial for getting that perfect look.
I am still learning after 10 years. Tip : if your not sure how the base will look, find and old base and test it out before you apply it to your final model.
