Post subject:  Figure casting help

Hi all :)

Well I've started sculpting an Ent to cast and I was wondering how I should go about doing it. Seeing as he will need lots of branches that will stick out all over the place do you think I should sculpt him in sections as to make him easier to cast? or should I sculpt him all in one piece and then chop the bits where he would join together?

Hi Sid,

GW's treebeard has separate branches and leaves, which makes casting much easier! I would recommend the same...sculpt the body, legs, arms seperately and put in holes for the additional branches and leaves.

About the mouldmaking itself-does anyone have good articles on hand? I'm sculpting spare bits as arms and weapons which I which I want to cast in metal!

Well, when I had my first try with an ent I used actual sticks and twigs from our garden. you can drill holes into the stick to stick (><) more sticks (god that sounds awful ^^) or twigs into it. Try to find one that kinda has a face shape already (Look at mine ;) ). the details can be sculpted onto it and you can also use putty blend everything together.

@slinger: I'm going to use UKfreddybear's casting article for mine :)

@rognar: Hhmmm, very interesting method! I think I might stick ( :rofl: ) with Green stuff this time though as I want my ent to be reasonably smooth. If I do another one some time I will certainly try your way 8)

Quick question on Ents: do they belong onto 40 or 60 mm bases? My stick ent is on 40 mm because i only had a 40mm spare.

The GW one comes with a 60mm base so I suppose that is the right size...

Probably not a very constructive suggestion to say sculpt him, then break him apart until it looks like you can cast him. :lol:

Seriously though, I guess sculpt the main body (including legs if desired). When you're happy with the rough shape set the indents for the arms and sculpt around those to hide the socket somewhat. Also add numerous indents for branch attachments. Sculpt the arms and branches separate if possible.

Just a suggestion based not on experience. 8)
