Hey all, I am currently trying to make all my miniatures WoTR legal by putting them in groups of 8, with command etc - as per usual. I bought, a few yrs back albeit, a single blister of Osgiliath Veterans and really want to paint them up and turn them into a full company or two. I know threads about this have been made before but most of them recommend green stuff. So, without green stuff and without spending a fortune, how to I convert some Veterans - I have spare WoMT to mess around with. What tools and techniques can I use to weather and wear them realistically? secondly: What techniques and small conversions can I use to make them stand out from the standard WoMT? Many thanks Corsair |

Hmmm, that could be hard without greenstuff, as the main difference between Vets and normal WoMT are the ragged cloaks and bandages they wear over their armour. However, you could probably fashion some out of newspaper; cut the pieces out, soak them in watered-down PVA glue and then apply them to the figures, perhaps? Additionally, you could take a hobby knife/file to some of the pieces of armour to give it a worn/battered look! Conversions like these enable you to be really creative, so just have a bit of fun with them |

Plastic clippers are your friend here - scrape one of the sides against the armour in a few places, shields too. Also, use them to hold the edges/corners of shields and bend until the plastic breaks, maybe rough it up a bit as well. Bend and break a few swords and bottoms of spears etc. Then paint them with LOTS of grime, some blood, lots of mud etc... |

Thanks guys - very interesting ideas there and I think ill try some of these. Problem I have with green stuff is its super hard to get flowing cloaks, robes and sashes right. |

I hear you... Maybe the newspaper trick I suggested will work better though looking forward to seeing how they turn out! |

Just some simple things I've read heard, including both of your advice: modelling: - cuts and holes in armour and cloth with a hot needle. - damaged shield. - newspaper sashes. painting: - different colour cloth (thinking a rich red - my main troops use blue lol). - stubble on face. thanks guys! |

Instead of newspaper you could try the heavy foil from round the neck of a wine bottle. Prepare a pattern with paper, then you can bend and fold it to shape. I use it for my banners, but it will make cloaks too. Make sure you cut it bigger than you think you need, to get the volume that looks good. You might get 3 cloaks from one bottle, and the scraps will make sashes (use LESS than you think you need for those). I'm working on a White Company, same stats as the Veterans but a lot whiter and cleaner, to be led by Boromir. I'm going to use Milliput for the cloaks, though. Mainly because I'm used to it and I give GW enough of my post-tax income already. |
