So I've got quite a few forces worth of LotR models, but very few musicians - and none for the older ranges like Men of Gondor and Rohan. While horns seem to be one of the more appropriate instruments to use, I'm wondering what people have used to convert musicians for these two forces specifically - preferably easy ones (I need a fair few musicians) from plastics. cheers! |

I've used WargamesFactory ancient german warband spruces before for horns. I had gotten quite a few for my germans vs romans battle I'm currently painting the figures for and had spare parts that I felt worked well with my Rohan conversions. As seen in the picture, I also used the flag and horse standards in the set to make a Rohan flag. The bare arm will take some shaving or green stuff smoothing to reduce the muscle and lack of outfit but it worked well enough for me. Also drilled a small hole at the top of the horn. |

I'm currently converting some gondorian drummers similar to the orc/goblin drummers for house rule playing. I'll post preview pics when I'm at a good stage to show. |

I like the use of other plastic parts to add to the variety and interest of existing pieces - there were a lot of horns at the Pelennor Fields which makes perfect sense as they were a standard means of signalling to friendly forces in the time before radios existed. Horns, bugles and drums could be heard even when banners and standards were hidden. |

In the books, Rohan used horns, and Gondor used trumpets often (I don't I have seen a reference to horns being used by Gondorians, other than Boromir's, but I'm not sure). The Elves from the first ages also used trumpets, so we might assume the High Elves of the Third Age also used them when going to war. Furthermore, Mordor used drums and horns I think, and Harad used horns, and I guess we can assume the Easterlings did as well (but I do not have a reference for the latter). |

Love that piper! Thanks for the ideas, I was thinking about Trumpets, but I wasn't sure (and it's been awhile since I last read the books!), and all of the Gondor Musician models I've ever seen seem to have horns. This gives me a lot more flexibility - thanks! |
