Would this be a better/easier idea to convert or even possible when compared to what I am doing in regards to: Taking pikemen, lopping off the pikes, and using the shafts as a skeleton for my crossbow sculpt.

How do Empire crossbows compare to Uruk-hai models and their crossbows?

Regards,
Wild

I'm also interested in seeing if anyone has any experience with converting Urukhai crossbowmen.

I had a similar idea, but using historical xbows instead of Empire.

Can't speak with specific wisdom on the matter - but WFB minis are Heroic scale, which means these Crossbows would be MASSIVE. I can't envisage them looking good, honestly.

I haven't made this sort of custom miniature, although now I might try!

But from experience of owning Fighting Uruk Hai and Empire Crossbowmen, in short, no, it would not work well. From memory, the crossbows themselves are nearly the same length as the Uruk Hai are tall, so it would look very bizarre! :)

There's a guy on ebay selling crossbows pretty cheaply

Maybe you should check it out if that's what you're looking for?

Their for dwarves apparently so they might be a better size for lotr figures.

I converted some Uruk pikemen to crossbowmen, but this was using the LOTR conversion kit which was available at the time. Among other things, this contained a crossbow that would fit perfectly on the pike-holding models.

For my Uruk crossbowmen, i used orc bows. Chop them off either side of the hand and glue them to the shaft of the pike. Voila. I had a bunch of spare bows from the plastic warg riders set though, so I didn't have to cannibalize any minis.

Here's a picture of an Uruk-hai next to an Empire crossbow (from the Free Company set) - very bulky indeed.
Various alternatives are likely to be both better and cheaper, like these:

or the plastic weapons from this kit, if you can find them seperately:

I recently used crossbows from that plastic Perry kit for some corsair crossbows. They fit them perfectly so would probability work well with the Uruks as well. I think you get 12 in the box if I remember correctly.

Ah, nice. The first thing I thought when that kit was previewed was 'great, plastic Arbalesters!', but I never got around making them myself.
