Wondering about useful ways to turn my escape from goblin town set into a decent good side army.

My current easy plan is to take a set of erebor dwarfs, and a set of grimhammers, and construct something like the following for a 500pts list:

Army of Thror

Warband 1 12/12
Balin
3 Warrior of Erebor with Spear;
3 Warrior of Erebor with Shield;
6 Grim Hammer
----
Warband 2 12/12
Dwalin
3 Warrior of Erebor with Spear;
3 Warrior of Erebor with Shield;
6 Grim Hammer

Thorin's Company allies

Warband 1
Fili
Kili

= 490pts

Alternatively maybe something like Nori&Dori would be more fighty than Fili&Kili, but with these two at least I get a little bit of shooting into the list.

Whilst a tooled-up Thorin seems quite a nasty idea, I think thats maybe a bit expensive in this points value, so I went with cheap-and-chearful Balin, with Dwalin who whilst quite expensive, seems worth it for what you get.

What else can I do to get an army out of the EFGT set?

You have 10 points left which you could use on 10 more spears and shields.

Dwalin isnt that expensive lol. Any hero with 3 attacks that is under 100 points is pretty cheap. I'd persoonally swap Balin, he's pretty weak. Honestly save for a spell-caster any hero with only 1 attack almost never is worth it (unless they're like 25 points or less). Personally I believe Oin and Bombur are far more useful than Balin and are equal in points cost, also Bifur is a VERY under valued hero. The key to Bifur is to suffer the first wound you take and save your fate point for his second wound because once he suffers that first wound he goes beserk and is very useful with his free heroic actions each turn.

Can't use more shields and spears than are included in the Erebor Dwarfs box ^^

I agree, Dwalin is worth his points, thats why he's in.

Balin is there because Thorin is too expensive IMO, and no other heroes from the EFGT set are able to lead warbands in the army of thror, unless I'm mistaken? Guess I could just taken a captain or similar instead, or are Thrain/Thror worth it at this points level?

If you think oin and bombur are useful, would you swap out Fili+Kili for them?

Thrain/ Thror are more expensive than thorin. And a basic thorin with no upgrades is only slightly more expensive than dwalin.

You are correct on Balin, I forgot about the whole army list junk. I rarely play at GW locations and when I do we basically allow all Dwarves to be under one faction. I do like Oin and Bombur because of their specials that they bring. Oin can heal heroes for free each turn and can expend a point of Will to make himself like a banner, Bombur pairs well with him by being able to replenish Oin's Will for free each turn lol.

I struggle to flat out say "dump Fili and Kili" because they are both solid heroes, basically captain level and have ranged attacks, which is nice as your army has none (aside from grim hammer throwing axes). Personally I prefer Bombur and Oin in the above list, gives your heroes a bit more use as they are all multi-wound.

With a bit of wiggling the list, I can come up with this:

Warband 1 11/12
Balin
3 Warrior of Erebor with Spear;
3 Warrior of Erebor with Shield;
5 Grim Hammer
----
Warband 2 11/12
Dwalin
3 Warrior of Erebor with Spear;
3 Warrior of Erebor with Shield;
5 Grim Hammer
----
Warband 3
Bifur
Bombur
Oin

Losing two grim hammers but swapping 2 of Thorins company for 3, maybe worthwhile :)

You could have used the other list and given the 6 spearmen shields, the Erebor dwarf sprue comes with 12 of them

Looking forward to building an army of thror force myself down the line.

Has anybody here used one in a points match yet?

I am about a third of the way there. We have been playing Hobbit figures only games, and our good side consists of most of the Company, Gandalf, an eagle 12 Grim Hammers, a Grim Hammer Captain and some Erebor Dwarf spearmen. The Hammerers have just been swamped by the goblins so far. I look forward to having a couple of solid units of Erebor Dwarves all with shields, and the rear rank with spears. The tide of Goblin Town Goblins realy needs a thin red beardy line backed up with spears to stop it dead in its tracks. The "Chittering Hordes" special rule has allowed them to absolutely cobber the unsupported Hammerers so far.

If you are going for a purist army of Thror as I intend to, its definitely worth including some Warriors of Dale with bows as they are otherwise out of missile troops, and particularly against Goblin Town armies will really need to whitle down the enemy before they get swamped. If you ever get a chance at taking out the scribe early, pull out all the stops to do it!

Because of their high defense and low numbers, making use of any defensible terrain is critical.

ah, sorry about that, from the painted up picture of the box contents on the GW website, it looks like they either have spears, or handweapons and shields, not spears and shields. Neglected to look at the sprue and see that there are 12 shields.

I was quite pleased when I noticed it. I think that GW has been ridiculously tight fisted offering no alternative modelling options, and no upgrade possibilities on the LOTR range until it released the plastic Ent and Troll. Fortunately we are seeing a change. I would however have liked to see options for a banner and horn blower. The Erebor Captain really should have come with a shield rather than a throwing axe.
