How many banners?

I am planning out some more models to collect and was wondering is there a general "rule of thumb" when it comes to how many banners you put in an army?

I was thinking of just having 1 banner in a 500 point force, and then maybe 2 for 750 pts?

Is this too little? Too much?

Initially I am collecting Elves but also looking at Mordor, would elves generally have less need, while Orcs would need more?

As you can only have a max of 1 Banner per hero at the greatest you can only have 1 per warband (unless you have independant heroes as well).

Personally I never take more than 1 for under 750 points (unless I'm fielding the King's Champion as well)

I usually only ever run 1 banner as the points really stack up if you take anymore. Also with the awesome new bonus of banner bearers being able to take a shield I ALWAYS equip with a shield to help them stay alive loner
