Khazad Guard vs Grim Hammers 500p

So, in an effort to see if Grim Hammers really are so much more worse than Khazad Guard I have don this army which will face a generic Mordor army to see who can get most kills.

Warband 1
Gimli
11 Kahazad Huard
1 dwarf warrior + shield, banner

Warband 2
Dwalin
11 Grim hammers
1 Grim hammer + banner

497p

A kick ass leader for both, a banner for both.
Not perhaps the most competitive if I were to show up in a tournament but fun to use in this context.

So who do you bet on?

Well I have a question to ask that would determine my pick.
Are you including the Warband leaders for each one's kill total?

Because if so I'd bet on Warband 2 because Dwalin is that beastly at cutting down foes.

If not then it would be the Khazad Guard for sure (dice could play it differently but statistically they should perform better). They're better in strength and defense as well as courage (body-guard). So they are significantly superior

Agreed on the khazad guard, although I find that if Grim-hammers get lucky with they're throwing axes then they can actually net quite a few kills across the course of the battle.

Maybe just have them led by an Erebor Cpt and a Dwarf Captain... It make it more fair. I'm not saying that Gimli is better than Dwalin or vice versa but it would make sure that the experiment is balanced. Also get the banner of Erebor to be held by a warrior of Erebor rather than a grimhammers because Durin's folk can't have a Kahzad holding one.

I agree that they should be led by generic captains to balance things out.

Of course what will really make the difference is who the forces face: If you face a D3, S3 army (Goblin Town/Wood Elves) then the Grimhammers will likely win the day as the Khazad's S4 and D7 give them no bonuses against these troops. In addition, the Grimhammers S3 Throwing Weapons would likely make a big difference against D3 opponents.

However, if you were to face a D4/S4 army (as Mordor is likely to be) then the Khazad Guard clearly have an advantage and will easily win the day.

However, I think it might ultimately be a fairly fruitless exercise. Imagine the Grimhammers do manage to perform better (even against a S4/D4 foe), it will purely be down to the dice on the day and it wouldn't sway anyone's opinions.

The simple fact is that Khazad Guard ARE better value for their points, the S4 and D7 and Bodyguard are more useful upgrades than Throwing Weapons and the Special Strike bonus. However, what I've always argued is that that doesn't mean that Grimhammers are rubbish and/or not worth taking, in fact, against Goblin Town, Wood Elf and similar armies I think they would be an excellent asset.

the special attack with hammer can be usefull to pin down foes while your heroes take on the killing, for example pin down cavalry :P

Like everyone said, it depends. Ill throw in an opinion because you asked so the more responses the merrier.

Like said, Dwalin is more of a murderer than Gimli. Problem is, with him, and his heroic actions, it may change the course of the battle for his warband. Gimlis good, but he may not have AS MUCH killin power.

Mordor is not a great way to test them.

First of all, the low defense of mordor helps the grim hammers. And Mordors low strength helps to avoid the natural awesome defense of the Khazad Guard.

My advice, if you really want to see whos better, is to test them against Isengard. That way, your hammers are being wounded on 5s and you khazads are still wounding on 5s not 6s like the hammers would be (generally although Isengard has a decent amount of strength 5 defense).

My vote all around between the fight value, strength, defense, and special rule, is Khazads. In any points match Id take them every time.
