Post subject:  Elven Advice

This is my first army, and I've started with Lothlorien Elves. I now have 500 pts painted up, so that's what I'll be playing with for now. To begin with, I went straight with the 500pt Lothlorien list on pp.32-33 of Legions, so it looks like this:

Haldir with heavy armor and elf bow
Galadriel with the Mirror of Galadriel
Wood Elf Captain with Elf Bow

5 Galadhrim Warriors with Elf Bow
8 Wood Elves with Wood Elf Spear
8 Wood Elves with Elven Blade and throwing dagger

Now, as I said, this is what I have painted, so this is what I am going into Monday's game with. It's probably too hero heavy for a 500pt game, but that's what I've got for now. My question to you is, how should I build out from here to give myself more and better options at 500pts? I have more wood elves and more Galadhrim and more Elf heroes, but I haven't painted them yet. So what should I be painting next to make this a better army?

Yeah, the Legions book (all the books really) give terrible example armies. Drop Galadriel and take lots more base troops, or take just Galadriel (but the fighty one) and lots more base troops.

Galadrim with shields backed up by wood elves with spears is a good combo. Personally I'd leave the bows unarmoured, since they're last into the fray.

I agree with Whafrog. Waaaay too heavy on the heroes. Get a banner and swap out the heroes for an uber hero (like fully armoured Celeborn or fighty Galadriel) or a couple of weaker ones (like Rumil or a captain). And if you have them, I recommend getting some knights.

I ran the list tonight and gotten beaten up. I managed to kill 12 models of his, but he had a huge orc list that bumped right up against the 50 model limit. He also had a troll and a nazgul. A lot of the orcs had shields, making them damn hard to hit. I made some tactical errors also, so that didn't help.

Spuds, how would you run your unit of Ghaladrim Knights in a 500 point list? A full 6 of them, or less?

So you would put shields on the Galadhrim models with the elf blades?

If you give them shields, I'd just call the elf blades "hand weapons", I rarely use them as elf blades. No point spending a point on something that isn't used. At most I'd give a hero an escort with unshielded elf blade carriers...he wins the fight, and they do the damage.

I think Galadhrim come with elven blades.

Trying to refine the list based on everyone's input and my own thoughts. How does this list look to you all:

Legolas (90)
Galadhrim Captain with Elven Blade (60)
Wood Elf Sentinel x3 (75)
Galadhrim Warrior with Elven Blade and Shield x16 (160)
Wood Elf Warrior with Wood Elf Spear x14 (112)

497 points

That's 35 models compared to the 24 I had in the last list.

I don't know squat about elf tactics but I do know they fancy bows. Legolas is great but what other shooting capabilities do you have? Elves have the best accuracy in the game so its probably not a bad idea to take advantage of that.

Here's another possible list, using a fully kitted out Celeborn instead of Legolas:

Celeborn with Elven blade, heavy armor, shield (150)
Galadhrim Warrior with Elven blade and shield x14 (140)
Galadhrim Warrior with spear x12 (108)
Wood Elf Warrior with elf bow & spear x10 (100)

498 points
37 models

Looking at the new rules...since the blades are kind of pointless with the shields, I'd trade them all for spears for free. This gives you better tactical flexibility and doesn't waste points. The ones that don't have a shield...might as well have a few with blades instead.

I'd trade the rest of your Galadhrim with spears for Wood Elves with Wood Elf spear and throwing daggers. The daggers are really handy and as effective as elf bows at short range. Also maybe drop three models and take 1 Sentinel, if he can move a troll into throwing dagger range he might have paid for himself.

I'm iffy on the bows + spears. You lose a model, but gain spear support in the end game...probably worth it.

I think you could get very good numbers in the army if you maybe just put in Rumil or Haldir and then get tonnes of guys. I got 32 models in a 400pts. Rivendell army and still had 10 archers which seemed to work nicely so I'm sure you could get a lot of guys. How about this if you want guys.

70pts. Rumil

150pts. 15 Galadhrim with shields and spears
150pts. 15 Galadhrim with elf bows
126pts. 14 Galadhrim with elf blades

Models:45 Might:3 Shots:15

This list is solid with heaps of guys and you get 15 shots a turn but you don't get much might. It might(ha, ha) be worth trying though.

Okay, my list now looks like this. It will be a couple of weeks before I can run it, as I've got to get some more Galadhrim and wood elves painted up, but it should be fun. :)

Celeborn with elven blade, shield, heavy armor 150pts
14 Galadhrim Warriors with elven blade 126pts
13 Wood Elf Warriors with wood elf spear 104pts
12 Wood Elf Warriors with wood elf spear and elf bow 120 pts

500 pts
40 models

I think this is a keeper, so I'm going to start building toward it. Wish me luck.

I played a Mordor list last night with my friend's models and he ran a Rohan list. Even though I won the game handily, he took throwing weapons on some of his Riders of Rohan and some of his Warriors, and they did almost half the kills on my orcs that he managed.

So, even though the throwing weapons on had on my last elf list did absolutely nothing last time, I'm going to blame that on my dice and get some back into the list.
