So i had my first official 300 point match last Sunday after playing with family and local friends for three yours or so i thought i was ready.... i got stomped!

Here is the army i used. please help me make adjustment.

Army- "The Dwellers Below"

Leader- Wild Warg Chieftain 75 points

Tank- Cave troll 80 points

Core- 3 wild wargs 24 points 12 goblins 60 points

Allies- Ringwrath with one might 60 points

After my force broke (ten goblins is not that hard to kill) ALL three of my heavy hitters fled like a bunch of weaponless hobbits. Advice?

Yep, take more troops. You have too many heroes, and 300 points is too small for more than one heavy hitter. If you think about it, you can hit the 50 model limit pretty easily with goblins, which should scare just about anybody. A goblin shaman can help your troops stick around with their Fury, and if you really want the wraith you'll still end up with many more troops than your opponents.

The Warg Chief isn't a good leader in general, because his standfast only applies to wargs. You'd only use him in larger armies, with a lot more wargs.

Yes the Chieftain works best with a pack of Wargs.

He isn't really worth it on that scale of an army if you want to use Goblins. I run two 300 point armies of a similar calibre. One is a speed army of 12 Wargs, 5 Giant Spiders and a Warg Chieften. The other is a Horde army of 48 Goblins and A Goblin Shaman. The Horde army usually does better than the Speed army as you can just throw the Goblins at the enemy. You can even fit in some prowlers into a Horde Army of only 300 points and not deplete the troop count of its 50 model maximum limit.

less heros yes but Id keep the chieftan in a warg heavy army. I've used him a couple of times but there's a new guy in our LOTR group and he is tearing it up with his Chieftan lately. Decent stats and an awesome model..hard to go wrong there :)

Druzhag can make your already formidable Warg Chieftain and Force to be reckoned with.

And if casting Enrage best is to risky on the chieftain you can always dump the spell on a regular warg for fight 6, strength 7, with 4 attacks

Sorry that I always disagree with much people but It's much better to take the spider queen instead of a warg chieftain. The spider queen is much and much better and especially at this point value because there are not much fight 6 heroes at that point value.

And if you take her you can easy leave the cave troll out because the spider queens hit's even harder.

Instead of a ringwraith take druzhag to lead the dwellers below:

Spider queen 75
druzhag 85
20 goblins 100
5 wild wargs 40

I think this army works a lot better then your first army but the idea is the same.

EDIT: And enrage beast on a spider queen with charge at that turn is even more fun. 9 fight, strength 9, 6 attacks and if you win. 12 hit's with reroll to wound :P

In WotR he is a good option for leading a Formation if you have the points to spare...but he's nothing better than a "captain". In SBG I have found him less valuable. Wild Wargs in both game systems are affordable, fast and effective combat models, and I really enjoy playing them in large numbers. Having a Hero in their Formation in WotR really does help and I've found he doesn't always attract the negative "anti-Captain" attention that can show up in WotR...probably because he doesn't stand out as much.

But to expand on this, as Hero of Gondor posted Druzag is a better choice for leading your army I believe. I've been really hacked up by his Spells of Ruin ( :P ) and his ability to call forth those extra units. Having a couple companies of Wild Wargs or Giant Spiders dropped behind your Formation when you've already committed to a frontal attack on someone can really ruin your day.

The Spider Queen is a good model but I wouldn't put her in the same class as the Warg Chief in WotR. She's an independent Formation, he's an upgrade. If you can only put the points to one or the other the SQ is almost always a better option, but they do not fill the same type of role.

That is fun, but I prefer using bats. They have more wounds and last longer.

The SBG stats are available in PDFs on GW's website, under the White Dwarf archives. They usually come out about 6 months after the WD issue. The November 2010 issue had the drake and king's champion, among others.

Okay thanks i just found them, im not trying to go off topic but i must say the sheildbearer is something i have been looking for for a while, but 60 points seems pretty steep especially considering they forgot to give him the bodyguard rule :( but its nice that he isn't entirely useless if you're leader is killed (the re-roll failed courage test rule)
