Nice simple question; how does one make Stone Giants? They seems like they could be VERY effective and powerful in WotR, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a good way for someone with mederate modelling skill to make a suitable beastie for use in the game. I was wondering especially if there are any models that can easily be modified and painted up correctly that'd look good to represent SG's. An idea I had was The Tomb King's Bone Giant, anyone used this? Thanks. |

I've got 2 in my army, they are indeed very powerful. I used the Warhammer Giants, since any others are not allowed in the official GW competitions. Here's a link to my blog post with the giant included: http://venivididouble1.blogspot.com/201 ... -army.html |

As was mentioned, the Warhammer fntasy giant is a good choice. I have been using one of these old D&D minis They are about the same size as the WH Giant and much cheaper, but not GW so won't work in GW stores. They are extremely effective (and Hard to Kill ) monsters, I think I am starting to like mine more than a dragon. |

I did a half decent 'sculpting a giant' article a few years back. Here's the link: http://www.one-ring.co.uk/kb.php?a=136 |

Unless you make it yourself from scratch or with only LotR parts, you can't use one in tournaments - the legalaities of the terms and conditions within the contract state that they may not allow a mixture or LotR and any non LotR parts. Personally, I haven't made one, but (unless you want to go to a tournament with it) you can simply use Warhammer Ogres/stone trolls/giants etc or buy another form of giant, such as the ones previously suggested. Could use an ent (without leaves) and paint it rocky instead - would also be tourney legal then. |

Luckily you are not correct. I've used Warhammer Giant Spiders at the WotR UKGT. I have also seen people use Fantasy High Elf Dragon as a Dragon at the LotR GT. The only deal with tournaments is that an army containing non-LotR parts may not be photographed for official publications, ie. WD and GW website. In the past the army also could not be nominated for the best army award, but now it can, as at the WotR GT one of the nominated armies also used fantasy Giant Spiders. The only thing you are not allowed to use is non-citadel miniatures. As long as the model comes from the citadel range, it is legal to use in a GW tournament. |

How about a converted plastic Ent or plastic Mordor Troll? More likely a Mordor Troll. Maybe figure out some way to make the Troll's face less troll like. A beard, perhaps? (I figure Ents and Stone Giants are akin somehow - Ent is a derivation of Eoten, the old English word for Giant. The ents as wood giants, the Misty Mountains guys as Stone Giants) Failing that, and if you're not going to official events, there's a Mithril miniatures Stone Giant which can be obtained for half-nothing (go to their Clearance sale) |

Hi, I recently finished my two Stone Giants for WotR. I took it literally and have created giants made of stone. Basically I made the bodies out of green stuff and then covered them in gravel using PVA to create the external texture which was then painted and dry brushed. I'm not a skilled sculpter so doing this way meant I didn't have to get the green stuff looking good at all, I could just "slap" it on with my fingers to gradually bulk up the model and the gravel finshed them off just fine. Quite an easy way of doing it if you want an original model and haven't got the time/skill to sculpt an amazing looking miniature out of green stuff. If I was to do it again I'd probably bulk a lot of it out with actual stones to save on the amount of green stuff needed. I'm not claiming to have created the perfect Stone Giant but they look more than good enough to play a key role in my Misty Mountains list when I play large enough games. |

The size is about perfect really. The base is just a bit thinner but is no big deal |

I year ago I was wondering to make a stone giant by sculpting, but I never begin to work. I think sculptink is the best way, and it is not so difficult, cause this is a huge monster. In my imagine the stone giandt had 4 hands, like Goro. And it could be similar like a rock monster from lego rock raiders. This is my oppinon. |

Ah! Well, here's the thing! I took 'Stone Giant' literally, as in, it's a giant made of stone too! After reading The Hobbit, maybe it does refer more to a mountain giant, which really opens up the modelling posibilities. The article on how to sculpt one from scratch is fantastic. A great article (clear, concise, good images), for a brilliant end result (they look great!) All in all, I still like the idea of taking the name of the unit literally, and doing a harry-housen esque construct of living rock, and the additional limbs is a very nice idea too. Right now, I've started 40k Orks, but I think LotR is something I just won't be able to resist adding to. The models are just too good, and WotR is, IMHO, the best game GW do. I may just take the plunge and try the Bone Giant-painted-as-stone approach (Works for The Tomb Kings Scorpions; they look great done that way). However, I'd like to create a story for where these things come from that may inform the modelling and conversion work. I'd imagine that huge rocks don't get it on and produce little pebbles that grow into boulders, then stone sort-of giants, the stone giants. I'd imagine they'd be a construct of magic, perhaps (since it's Misty Mountains), Goblin MAgic, so it'd be inspired by an aesthetic they'd choose. MAybe something mean n' nasty. I know! Maybe it'd be a statue from a realm of man, like the one from which the head was cut, that lay by the statue with a wreath of weeds? Maybe they'd animate something like that, and bend it to their will as a cruel mockery of the memory of the great figure it represents? |

I don't like the look of the Warhammer giants. None of the giants linked to here feel Middle-Earthy enough for me, though some of them do look awesome. |
