Okay, so I'm coming to you guys for advise. I've played the SBG in the past, with a pure Grey Company force. So, as I feel like playing again, I got lots of questions about army comp. I aim for around 300 to 400. Small games I find I like the best. So, here we go.

I want to start an evil force. One problem; Goblins, Orcs, and the Harad don't do it for me. So, what do? I'm thinking an Angmar army, maybe led by Buhrdur or some Barrow-Wights, and primarily made up of the more supernatural of Sauron's minions. Specters, Vampires, ghosts, maybe a Ringwraith. What are my options for viablity, here? I'm not talking about making it tourney read, but just so I can compete a decent level.

+++

Going back to that Grey Company force, what can I do to make it a little more varied. I know a definately got bored just shooting all day long, so what are your suggestions for allies? Considering that they are lightly armoured, shooty, with decent fight values, I was thinking some kind of heavy infantry could work. So, Elves, Dwarves, and maybe Warriors of Arnor/Minas Tirith. Best options? Heck, best thematic options?

+++

Okay, last one. I really like the look of the Wood Elves, and I think they could work as a "neutral" kind of faction, despite them being good. So, here's what I'm thinking for 350pts

Legolas- 90pts
Haldir w/Elf Bow- 75pts
7 Wood Elves w/Spears and Throwing Daggers- 70pts
6 Wood Elves w/Elven Blades and Throwing Daggers- 60pts
6 Wood Elves w/Elf Bows-48pts

For the wood elf army you said i usually only have 1 hero in an army around that points but that might just be me i actually don't really have a clue what everyone else does.. Also i find Elven blades pretty useless if i was you i would prob swap them for more spears. But yeah you might find Elven blades usefull they might work for you or something idk.

as for taking an evil force, Angmar isn't really a faction you want to build an army around; the only base troops are orc warriors.
What I personally find good to start an evil force with are morrannon orcs backed up with something big like the shadowlord or a mordor troll chieftain.

as for gray company: I've always used dwarfs.

and finnaly the woodelf army: use only haldir and as said above: drop the elven blades for throwing daggers.

Well you mentioned Angmar and you are looking for a heavy infantry type to support your rangers, so why not keep the theme and use Arnor. The Miniatures you will have are limited (Arvedui: king, Malbeth: magic, Command blister and Warrior blisters). But you will have the option of adding Minas Tirith to your allies so more defence 6 soldiers at your disposal plus a number of heroes and siege engines etc. Grey Company isn't that fun for either player but you can use those rangers as the Arnorian rangers.

Angmar has shades, spectres, wargs and trolls as well as Warg Cheiftain, Burhdur and Gulavhar so plenty to pick from. You don't need orcs although they are filthy cheap so I personally would take some. The wargs make decent alternatives so long as they have terrain cover. A pack of trolls is a scary thought. You can also take the Witch King although Gulavhar is my preferred choice.

Keep clear of the elves (unless you mean the armoured ones). The wood elf sculpts are awful so painting them becomes a pain and they are quite limited to one troop choice with defences 4-5. I suppose if you like quicker battles wood elves are the way to go :P

For your 350pts woodelf
Drop haldir. You only need 3 might at 350pts if you are using woodelves.
Numbers matter in lotr, an idea would be to think "if I come up against 40 harad would I win?

For your evil one of my main opponents used a burhdur army, it worked well with plenty of orcs to allow you to get some cool models in there (barrow, spectre etc)
Dont be too hero heavy with evil as you need numbers to weather the storm.

For evil perhaps look at minus morgal, with black numenorians, spectres, morgal stalkers, morgul knights and cool heroes like a random fire shaman and gothmog they are very cool.... oh and an awesome catapult.

So, I'm pretty sure I've been sold on Burhdur. He's got a great model, and I do like the idea of trolls. Like, lots of trolls. How do they perform in multiples? I was thinking Burhdur plus two in 350pts.

As to the Grey Company, I'm stuck between a contigent of Dwarves, and a smattering of Elves. I feel that the elves fit the theme a little more; Eregion is, of course, the home of the elves, while the only Dwarf colony is Ered Luin. Not to say it couldn't happen, but it's less likely I feel. Either way, this is what I was thinking for the Grey Company portion.

3 Dunedain w/Spears- 75pts
4 Rangers of Arnor w/Spears- 36pts
8 Rangers of Arnor- 64pts

Conveintly, it leaves half the army unfilled. Basically, the spear-users support the main shield wall, which acts as a main counter charge. I just thin out the enemy ranks, and have combat take care of the rest. So, any suggestions in regards to this one?

I think you could take Burhdur and 3 Cave Trolls for the 350 points (Burhdur is about 110 points isn't he?) That would be a pretty solid force!

I'm really tempted to run all Trolls...that just sounds fun.
