I saw, while browsing at my local lotr store, a huge big box, called 'Easterling Invaders'. It had 46 warriors, a captain, bannerbearer and 10 kataphracts. I was like, wtf is this?!? Ive never seen anything like that before, and it isn't on GW's site... Thoughts?
It's an old set, one of the Battlehosts boxed sets that GW used to sell.
Yes, these Battlehosts were made when Legions of Middle-Earth and the current Two Towers journey book were released back in 2006. I've got the white dwarf containing those releases here in front of me, and one of the army boxes was an Easterling one called "Eastern Invaders" (the others were one for Rohan, for Mordor, for Gondor and for Isengard, while a Dwarf set for the Khazad-dum sourebook release and an updated Gondor set for the Gondor sourcebook were later released). They were basically the LOTR equivilent of the 40k Battleforces and Warhammer Battalions, each containing around 400-700 points worth of models, both plastic and metal. I think they lasted a year or two before being taking off of the shelves and the website.
Do you think the box that you found could be one of these? The name of the box seems the same, but the contents differ slightly from what you said. In white dwarf the models included are listed as:
1 Easterling Captain
1 Easterling Banner Bearer
6 Easterling Kataphrakts
16 Easterlings with Swords
8 Easterlings with Bows
16 Easterlings with Spears (and shields, of course)
Back when one of my mates played LOTR he purchased this box set, and Im certain that the content matched with the listing above.
As for pricing, at the time of it's release it was 80 Euros (£50 in the UK),
but this was back when 24 model box sets were 20 Euros/£15 and 3 model blisters were 11.5 Euros/£6 (those were the days!
). They did save you a fair bit of cash at the time though, a variation of savings with each box ranging from around £10-18. When it was £50/80 Euros in white dwarf the Eastern Invaders box was shown to save £16 against buying the models seperatly, so if you compare the box you found now with how much it costs to buy the models seperatly you'll get a rough idea of the saving.
Hope that helps.
Sorry for the long post, I got a bit carried away! The box you found was probably this Eastern Invaders army set. I guess there are a few benifits of keeping a load of old white dwarfs stashed away in a cupboard!
