Greetings everyone! The last weeks I've been very keen to play, but me and my friends haven't had any time. But I've read a lot here on The One Ring and I've tried to create different army lists. I've got quite much Gondor stuff, but not that many elites. So before I buy them, I'd like to hear your opinions on how to compose an effective Gondor army. I'm a beginner, so this list might not be good at all This is one I came up with: Warband 1 - 12/12 Damrod 12 Rangers Of Gondor w/spear and bow ------------------------------------ Warband 2 - 12/12 Beregond 12 Fountain Guards w/shield and spear ----------------------------------- Warband 3 - 12/12 Cirion 6 WoMT w/shield and sword 5 WoMT w/spear and shield 1 WoMT w/banner ----------------------------------- Warband 4 - 9/12 Faramir /w horse, heavy armour and shield 3 KoMT w/shield 5 KoMT 1 KoMT w/banner --------------------------------- 700 points, 49 units, 8 might, 14 bows, 10 horses. Here I haven't used any Citadel Guards. How are they? Rangers with both spear and bow costs 9pt and have 3+ for shoot. Citadel Guard costs 11 for spear and bow and have 4+ for shoot. But Citadel Guard has one more defence and elven bow. Ranger/citadel guard will probably be on the second line behind GotFC and do shooting/supporting, so maybe I can sacrifice that extra defence? I'm really unsure of how the Citadel Guards are in play. Fill me in if you want to! - Ozmo |

And Citadel Guards, just like Fountain Guards have the bodyguard rule, that's a big deal! |

Citadel guards: very good S3 bow however they cost 10 and they shoot 4+, they can do well in shooting and in combat ( D5, M4, bodyguard rule) Rangers: Cheap ( for a 4/3+ ) excellent in shooting (unfortunately only S2 bows), they can also do well in combat but have D4, keep them for shooting However i wouldn't use it as support units because you had to split them up in two bands ( 6 GotFC+6 rangers X2) |

Hi I agree with other comments you do need both Citadel guard and GotFc, both have bodyguard rule and elven bows S3 are lethal i played in tourney with follwoing army yesterday and came second but was interesting and my only loss was two fellbeasts with witchking and shadow lord which unfortunately nullified the shooting however was able to feed the warriors 1 at a time into combat with the ringwraiths thereby reducing their will both with bodyguard and then increased courage from hornblower however some priority's didn't go my way and eventually lost Faramir and then at break point my army unfortunately faded away because the hornblower rolled bad But your army does look good Warband 1 Leader Faramir with Heavy armour and shield 10 GotFc Warband 2 Beregond 10 Citadel guard with bow avenger bolt thrower with swift reload Warband 3 Captain of MT 10 warriors of MT with spear and shield WoMt with Banner Womt Horn blower |

The ranger vs citadel guard debate is almost as old as the game itself. Neither is ultimately better than the other, it's all opponent-depending. One rule though is this: if you can have 10+ of each, have 10+ of each. If you can't, choose 1 and always max to 33%. I won a UKGT with a 700pts force that had 12 rangers of arnor / gondor and 10 citadel guards, along with a ton of fountain guards, beregond, madril and Saruman - in the old rules you really couldn't make a better Gondor force and that one proved that both rangers and citadels are worth their cost. As for the army at the top of the page, it looks solid. The only major thing I would change would be to swap Cirion for Madril for his special rule. Otherwise I would drop Faramir's heavy armour for normal one and get 5 shields for the knights instead. Big heroes don't need high defence at all and Faramir is borderline between medium and big. |

Thank you for the answers! I guess I'll try to make that army with the changes Blackmist mentioned, although getting the GotFC might cost me a bit. So it's worth taking spears on the rangers? The rangers will be cheaper for me to get, so i'll probably get those. By the way, can you buy mounted Faramir without heavy armour? Or must you convert? Last question: how are the Osgiliath Veterans? I won't be buying these, but converting some of my WoMT is an option. |

I once've calculated the rangers/citadel thing, and a same amount of points spent on both'd mean the citadel guards'd cause more wounds to defence 1,3,5,7 or 9 troops, not to mention their defence that comes realy handy, aswell as the bodyguard rule |

Really enjoyed reading this post , we just started playing SBG and up till now only play with one or two warbands each just to familiarise with the game , I also use gondor . Maybe I'll use your suggested army for our first real battle. One question though , how good are avenger bolt throwers? madtankdog mentioned one, I tried one out bit it seemed uneffective and mostly redundant because it couldnt shoot once my armies where close together and fighting |

Last time I checked, Avengers were pretty great (but take quick reload!) |

Avengers used to be good back in the LoME days when you had at least 3 turns of shooting before combat, with the new deployment rules combat is usually joined in the first 1 or 2 turns which kinda makes it useless as you cant shoot into combat. If you are playing a large game and you can stick it on a hill then it is worth taking, but other than that, take something else. 10 rangers of gondor will do a better job for the same points. |

Is it better then to use Gotfc and CG's rather than WOMT? |

D0Cdeath wrote: Is it better then to use Gotfc and CG's rather than WOMT? in a short answer...yes. they are worth the extra point or two for the bodyguard rule, the longbow (CG) and the extra fight value. |

Just one more question ( this probably should be a new thread!!). I noticed in the suggested armies above there are no big hitter included eg aragorn . In WOTR although expensive he's very good and I included him whenever possible how does he fare in SBG ? , there seems to be a lot more focus on lower tier heros. |

I don't know about WotR, but SBG tends to be that way, there is somewhat of a focus on numbers. That's the benefit of 20-30 point heroes like Gondor has, you can take some elites and still be "swarm-ish". (O for similar minor high elf heroes! ) Above 800 points you can reliably get some heavy hitters in there. Consider that if you took the original list and just added Aragorn-King + a couple of fountain guard you be at 1000 points, but an evil opponent could add 3 goblin warbands for the same price. If you're playing friendly games you might agree on a model limit so you can try out some of the big hitters. |
