Post subject:  Which hero for low points games? mirkwood upgrade in melee?

I just started the LOTR SBG hobby and I am soon finished with my first 12 wood elves. In troops my next purchase is Sentinels.
Now I am wondering what commander i should take in low points games? I'm going to buy thranduil sooner or later because I want the mirkwood upgrade, but is he too expensive for say 200 p games? And what does the WE captain have that the Galadhrim captain dont? Isnt the possibility to take shield more important than the possibility to take throwing knifes? Or should I get a Stormcaller?

And is the + 1 fight worth it for Melee elves? I mean with elven swords or wood elf spears? I know that it is definitely worth it on the ranged WEW :P

I dont know all the rules as I havent read them yet but my rulebook is on the way, will hopefully get it this week :)

For a 200p game I would say a standard Captain/Legolas. Thranduil is cheap, so I think he'd be good as well. If I remember correctly he also has some magical ability. But I probably wouldn't pay for the upgrade you get from Thranduil in such a small points game, I'd rather have the extra person.

Haldir would also be good, as he is much cheaper than legolas

Rumil is the best and cheapest. Thranduil and legolas are the same points. Haldir (either version) are alright but I'd rather have the Rumil/ thranduil. Rumil is the same pts as a galadhrim cptn but you get extra might and a awesome spec rule.

I completely forgot Rumil and Haldir were in the same Army list. I've used Haldir, Defender of Helms deep a few times before and he's pretty solid.

I've never used Rumil but from what I've read on here, and from people I've spoken to, he's pretty epic.

Thranduil will get a new profile for when the hobbit part 2 comes out that I suspect will be better, so maybe you should wait for that? I'd choose Rumil at any points level (although I do have a secret love for stormcallers).

What is this +1 Fight upgrade? I thought Gil-galad was the only one who could upgrade Elves to Fight 6?
And I see no reason to take Elf captains of either kind when Rumil and Haldir are out there.

He is. Thranduil (who I assume you are talking about) can upgrade wood elves to have a better shoot value. Celeborn can be used to upgrade galadhrim courage.

For the points Rumil is a great low-cost leader. His special rule is brought up a lot and can really steal the thunder from your opponent when you find yourself winning more than your fair share of Fight rolls with him, but I also like his defense. Thranduil is a very good option as well but I typically wouldn't use him (or Legolas) below 250 points.

As for the upgrades, I did not feel Thranduil's Mirkwood Guard were worth the extra couple points per model under the old rules, and with the weakening of bow fire even more under the Hobbit change I can see no real use for it. If you had Gildor leading a warband of Wood Elves (you could always give his model/profile a new name and say he's one of Thranduil's top leaders), then his upgrade is more attractive. Mobility is very important in SBG.

Be cautious about including a Sentinel at 200pts as well. In such low games every model counts more and the Sentinel is worth two WE warriors. I typically find the Sentinel's songs are most effective to frustrate enemy Monsters due to their low Courage but high damage potential (this is even more so with the new rules), but are you likely to face even a Cave Troll at 200 points? If so then the Sentinel could be worth gold, but if you are just facing a force of standard warriors you are probably better off with the extra model and saving the singer for larger games.

Got my rulebook today! Yay!

After reading a bit in the rulebook I'm now choosing between Rumil and Gildor. Think I will get both miniatures and just try them both out :) Ty for your help :)
