Post subject:  New Goblin Army

Hello all!

Well, I'm making good progress with my 500pts Grey Company force (waiting on Rangers of the North trade with DMS then just need Arathorn) and also started my 500pts All Cavalry Rohan force (just short 2 x sons of Eorl and 2 x Rohan Royal Guard)

I have coerced a client of mine who collects lego but is also a LOTR fan to give sbg a go, so I have someone to learn to play with and he is very keen on the new goblins.

I have told him the starter set is a good way to go (GreenDragon, I may be coming to you for this!) and have even offered to pay for the good models to lower his overall investment.

As we'll be likely playing between 500 and 1000pts games, approximately (Not asking for specifics) how many points should my army be to match the goblin horde from the starter set so I can work out what to organise against him? Probably a roundabout way of asking for total points, but a ball park for me to work with would be wonderful!

Help appreciated! Thanks guys.

I'm pretty sure points totals are fine :)

You could make this army with all the goboes in that set:

Warband 1 12/12
The Goblin King
12 Goblin Warrior
----
Warband 2 12/12
Grinnah
12 Goblin Warrior
----
Warband 3 12/12
Goblin Captain
12 Goblin Warrior
----
Warband 4 0/12
The Goblin Scribe
----
389 points (you could always add some 2H weapons to knock it up to 400 points :) )

is that what you were looking for?

That's great Sid, very helpful! Looks likely I'll be encouraging him to fill out that etc 100 pts somehow :)

(by the way, good to see you at the forumgaming site. I'm the developer of the lotr forumgame... the delay has been because you guys on this forum have me distracted with sbg!)

Then expand to ally in Moria goblins and beasts of all sorts.

or just buy a golblim box with 18 othergolblims and a captain, that will be 107 points more and that brings you to a total of 496 points (take 4 2hand-weapons or 1 more golblim)
I think that's a good way.

Thanks Azog, lets see what he wants to do (sounds like a good option you have suggested)

Firstly, put the Captain on his own, not the Scribe. NEVER LEAVE THE SCRIBE WITHOUT GUARDS.

Then, yes ally in Trolls, Drums, Shamans.. when expanding.

I'd tell your friend to be prepared to lose alot of Goblins, but thats the way Goblin lists roll. I've played a few games with my Goblins and i've only lost two (one was because of Erestor, Terror stopped me from countering him. The other was because my opponent decided to play 350 points over our agreed 500 point limit). It suffers against enemies with Terror, but with 3 ranks of Goblins (1 to charge, 1 to support, 1 to step up when the first Goblin dies) they'll grind the enemy down.

always try to get as many models in combat as possible, don't let them stand useless, try to get as many in combat as possible and keep the remaining behind

That's where allied moria shamans come in under. Cast fury and laugh as your goblins charge your opponents terror causing models.

Why would casting Fury help in charging terror causing Models?

Because Fury makes your Gobbos automatically pass Courage tests.

It's amazing what information you find when you look in the rulebooks.

/sarcastic comment.

on topic. Fury is the lifeblood of goblins. Being able to get 3,4,5 models per combat gives you a much better chance of winning. And it keeps your models on the table longer when you get broken (because you will).

Hey Southy, let's be a little lenient on the newer guys. We don't wanna scare 'em off right? 8)

Right Hurin. We do want them to buy the rulebook though ;)

On the topic of the list. When you do expand this upwards towards 1000pts, I strongly recommend allying in Groblog (for his fury bonus) and a drum. Especially as the Great goblin can benefit from both the drum and fury. makes him hell of a lot harder to kill.

Haha so sorry, I'm such a wolly. I read that and only noticed the special fate roll part. I tend to play against Gondor so never worried too much about passing courage tests because of terror. Does that mean when I'm broken, my guys within 6" of the shaman pass there courage tests?

I play Goblins, and can't believe I never noticed this! Still real new to SBG after only playing WOTR for ages.
