How is this for a themed army to honour the strength of the women of middle earth?

I’m sure this has been done before but I am new to this site! This is based on figures I already own, I just need to get Arwen.

Lothlorien war band
Galadriel
4 wood elves with cloak & bow
4 wood elves with cloak and elf blade
4 wood elves with cloak and spear

Rivendell war band
Arwen with elven cloak
4 high elves with bow
8 high elves with elven blades

Rohan war band
Eowyn with armour
9 warriors of Rohan with throwing spears & shields

Total Points 600

You have too many cloaks, drop most of them and increas your numbers a little.

Nice theme, but if you really wanted an all women army you could do Easterlings sinec they have more warrior women than everyone else.

I like it, but gothmog is right about the cloaks. Better to have a stormcaller for the same cost, and with a little converting there's no reason it couldn't be a woman. Or upgrade the WoR to RoR, or swap some WE for 2 Sentinels and an additional WoR, or...

so would you drop cloaks altogether or just keep them for those on the frontine as extra protection?

Ok how about this as an alternative, once again it is based on figures I already have (except Arwen).

Lothlorien war band
Galadriel
4 wood elves with bow
4 wood elves with throwing dagger and elf blade
4 wood elves with throwing dagger and spear

Rivendell war band
Arwen with elven cloak
4 high elves with bow
7 high elves with elven blades
1 high elf with banner

Rohan war band
Eowyn with armour
8 warriors of Rohan with throwing spears & shields
4 warriors of Rohan with shields (could switch them for bows)

Total Points 599

I am tempted to get a mounted Eowyn and make her war band all riders. That would take the points total to around the 670 mark. However I am trying to just paint what I already have and not buy new models! I collect far faster than I can paint!

Joining this site has not helped in curbing my addiction

The cloaks are not front line protection, because they don't work if there isn't already something in the way. I like your second list, but I think you should give Eowyn a shield as well. And adding a horse and leading RoR is better yet. For one, a horse gives her a much better chance of survival, and for two, all your RoR can shoot.

According to PJ and GW.

yeah i was considering the shield for Eowyn. That would take me to 604. Dropping some throwing daggers on the wood elves will bring me back to 600 or less.

How strict are people normally with points? In my old warhammer days a point or two over was never an issue.

Well, if it's an easy fix to bring it to the points exactly, like dropping a couple daggers, then I would go ahead and drop them. However, if you're 1-4 pts over, most people won't care, they'll probably add in a couple extra spears and stuff themselves.

Ah - the title of the thread confused me - I thought you were proposing an all female army and was trying to think what it would be made up of as there are so few named female characters and not much mention of female troops. Now I understand.

What about Gimli's mother and a bunch of dwarves?

You have to also field Tom if your fielding Goldberry as per the: Tom has his house to mind, and Goldberry is waiting rule.

Ahh yes Goldberry (and Tom). Nice idea!

I have not seen Gimli's mum anywhere, maybe i mistook her for a male, the beard and all.

I don't have the skill to just craft breasts onto male rank and file troops and it seems a little crass to me anyway. I like the idea of the ladies being in charge giving the orders to the male worker drones...

There's something to lobby GW for: some generic captains/stormcallers/shamans of both genders for some armies. Otherwise, there aren't too many named female characters to choose from.

Post subject:  Re: Ladies of Middle Earth 600 point army

That's because women rarely led or were enlisted into armies, except for special persons (like Joan of Arc) or as a last resort. Even if this is a fantasy world, it would still hold true most of the time in Middle-Earth. I could see generic female shamans/stormcallers because that's an inate ability that most generals would want in their armies, regardless of gender.

I do not like sexism against men. (or sexism against women for that matter)

That said, I agree with you to an atent in wanting female warriors, but you have to remember that in the middle ages, the fighting was done by men. And some men would refuse to take order sfrom a woman just because she is a woman. I'd link you to a women and middle-ages thread elsewhre but I cannot find it exactly.

Many cultures throughout history have had matriarchal societies and in many women fought and died alongside men in battle. Eowyn makes a lovely speach in the movie about women having learnt that they can still die upon swords etc. and we have the term shield maidens. So where are they? The idea of Eowyn leading a group of shield maidens into battle is fantastic. I want those models!

The reality is LOTR does not do fair justice to women as it was written at a male dominated time with a male perspective of history.

Post subject:  Re: Ladies of Middle Earth 600 point army

Not really, there are very few recorded battles where women took place in large numbers. LotR is very fair, as it is semi based on real societies. That's the way it was.

Besides, one of the most powerful characters on the side of good was a female (Galadriel), who was trained by a female spirit (Melian) who was able to confound Morgoth (the most powerful entity save for Eru) for centuries, whose own daughter (Luthien) saved Beren, beat Sauron and put Morgoth to sleep. Then you have Sauron's strongest servant brought low by a female and a hobbit. If that's not a good selection of strong (yet also believable) female characters, I don't know what is.
