Hi guys, I just wanted to know if you shared my opinion that the grey company would not do very well in 500pts vs an all cavalry force Also the same question again, but vs Isengard Uruks and phalanxes? Thanks, LordElrond |

From what I can gather, Uruks are a tough one for grey company, with their higher strength against the lower defence of the rangers. As for grey company vs all Cav Rohan, I could test this for you soon. My suspicions are that even a couple of good rounds of shooting could dismount many riders, and as the riders are fewer and rangers have spear support, it'll be easier for riders to get mobbed once they hit the lines. But that's all speculation from me, being a veteran of only two games!! |

Yes, but S2 vs D5 is sill a 6 to kill. And everyone gets flattened at a cavalry charge. |

The rider might require 6s but remember, each hit has to effectively take an in the way roll to determine whether horse or rider gets hit. Horses that were hit require 5+ to kill. Lets say my 500pt grey company get two turns of shooting before my 500pt all Cav can reach them in combat. That's 31 models with a bow firing at maybe 16 standard riders. Nearly 2 shots to each rider. They have a 66% chance of hitting. For the sake of the example, We'll accept the percentage chance as actual successful rolls. So 21 models hit. There is a 50:50 whether horses are hit or riders. Lets say 11 riders are hit and 10 horses. There is 16% chance riders will be killed and a 33% chance the horses will be killed. That's 2 riders and 3/4 horses in one turn of shooting, effectively losing a third of your "riders" In my 500pt force, there are 2 sons of eorl, 2 mounted rrg, erkie and Eomer, so 6 models pretty much takes out 25% of your mounted capability. A second turn of this statistically would take your rider force to 50% and although dismounted riders aren't dead so the force isn't broken, lets say that means maybe 10 mounted models hit your lines. That's 10 models against 32, all with spears and due to the horses bases, it wouldn't be hard to ensure 3 grey vs each cavalry model... Anyhow, my analysis! |

Of course, there are other things to consider, before the above is torched by the pedants (RoR also get to shoot!) but just my quick observations. What does everyone else think? |

if you use GC V Rohan, shoot out the horses asap. form a nice spearline so when the riders charge, you will also have 2 dice in the fight. and being rangers, you have the higher FV (unless they are redshields, royal guard, SoE). |
