Well, there is already a similar thread on TLA, I don't like discussing this sort of thing because, well, the element of not knowing what will turn up at an event gets kinda nulled when people talk about their forces.

However I think everyone not playing goblins is probably having a tricky time working out what to take. In 300pts you can take about 20 elves/dwarves, maybe a few more dwarves if you don't mind spamming naked rangers. Compare this to the 40 odd goblins you can fit in and, well, good seems kinda stunted. Nevertheless i am almost certain i am going to take a good force, simply for the challenge.

That said, an all goblin force seems incapable of achieving all but the oath for not breaking, whereas a 20 model good army will likely achieve the other oaths with relative ease, lots of good armies have solid shooting, throwing weapons, and some form of magic. Against scrubs like gobbo's you will also have lots of squicsy targets to kill to get the oaths, so it's not all bad.

Anyway, you guys got any tips to squeeze the most out of a good army at 300pts?

You could counter the goblin hoard with a Mina's tirith hord. Or take an all hero good army, like Murin+Drar and the twins, like I saw in another thread.

I run a Goblin Town horde at 500, my local GW did a 300 point campaign and I really struggled to make a list for it. I never got to play (awkward hours at work), but I was thinking an Elf list with a few bows would be quite a hard counter, even with a 2:1 advantage i'd be unable to trade off as efficiently as I would normally be able to. Also, anything with Terror royally screws Goblins.

Well personally I think Gandalf the white with Radagast would screw up gobos pretty bad.

You can also do Knight of the White tower with 12 warriors of minas tirith.\

Also, as Rabid Bunny said anything with terror will probably give you a ratio of 2:1

I would use Dwarves. And i would try to max my numbers. They have higher stats than goblins. And with def 5+ goblins would need only 6(maybe 6/4) to wound your models. Thus his archers will have 33% chance to hit and 17% chance to wound you with their bows each round. With 10 archers on his army thats 1-2 of your models killed per round provided he has normal rolls. You have str 3 bow which means that you wound his models on 5+.
And if you trust the lore of Middle Earth, Dwarves are killing goblins their entire life ;)

I don't think a 40-model Moria force is anything to worry about, but a certain 26-model Moria force (content of which I won't disclose because I might be using it) has a much better potential. As for stuff like Gandalf or Saruman, this isn't 1000 or even 500. This is 300 and this is no place for heroes over 100 points because numbers play an important role. I might make a blog post this weekend on my thoughts on 300-pts meta, as I analysed every single army the other day and came up with 15 lists that could come up.

Here's a list I came up with if anyone want a to have a fun game with elves
Thranduil
3 sentinels
1 wood elf with bow, and cloak
6 wood elfs with spear, and throwing daggers
2 wood elfs with elven blade and throwing daggers.
I think it's about 300pts, if not you can just add more wargear to the wood elves.
Plus a ton of magic to annoy and mess up your enemies. Thranduil can cast terrifying aura first turn and might it up so it's an exhaustion spell. Then sit back, relax and throw daggers and move opponents out of the way with the sentinels.

Terrifying Aura is already an exhaustion spell, chanelling increases the range.

Oh, well thanks for telling me I didn't know that. In any case it just helps the strategy :)

@Haldir it was actually me who pointed out that Murin, Drar, and the twins, make up a 300pt team. Dwarves are looking like a great option though, that and/or fiefdoms is what i will probably take.

Fili, Kili, Ori, Dori, Oin, Bifur: 300 points.

4 solid fighters, healing and banner (sort of), sniper ability, the ability to regain heroic stats and sometimes to get free heroic actions.

Could be a lot of fun.

Does anyone have any opinions on warriors of Rohan being used as Dunlending warriors? Or should i get my converting cap on?

Post subject:  Re: Army tips for the 300pt tournament

that would come under proxy...which you yourself said wasnt allowed. Think I have made my feelings on proxies made many a time so I wont do it again. No point in starting an argument.

Post subject:  Re: Army tips for the 300pt tournament

I agree SouthernDunedain, no need for an argument here :) Although the rulespack was changed some point last week so that conversions and proxies that represent what they are being used as were allowed. I didn't do that for my own gain btw, all the other rulespack for non-gw events i have read have said proxies and conversions, within reason, are allowed (not to say they all say that though), besides i am pretty certain on my list, which does not contain proxies, i was just toying around with the idea of dunlendings.

Also @Damian, how would your 6 dwarves would stand up against the following:

Fimbul on Fell Warg
2 Dunlending chieftains with shield
Vrasku
Mauhur

Same, although it does just seem like every good list I make is not quite there yet though...

If it was me playing I would probably go dwarves..

cheap like gimli ou Balin with durinĀ“s axe. maybe Iron guards to chew through goblin ranks and a bunch of high defences

If I was to mix with elves I would definitely use storm caller for the magic he got, it can be handy pinning down a bunch of goblins a turn :)
