Can any one help me out? Been playing for over a year now I have a gondor army over a 1000 points. And my mate has a dwarf army over a 1000 points. But I'm struggling to beat him, and when I do it's very close and mainly down to boromir. And when he wins he wins by quite a lot?? |

Try playing various different battle types. Gondor may not be able to beat Dwarves in a straight fight, but in different scenarios (capture the point, for example), Gondor may be able to win. |

My army list is: 5 company's of warriors with boromir 4 company's of archers 6 company's of knights with faramir 1 company of citadel guards with pippin and gandelf Bolt thrower Trebuchet Trying to find good scenarios were are army's match the requirements. But we messed up by both buying a good army. |

WOTR? I'd say to get rid of one of your Epic Heroes (Faramir probably), move Boromir into the Knights, Gandalf in the Warriors and Pippin wherever you need him. You need more formations, I reckon. Lose the trebuchet, because they just drain points, and replace it with a formation of rangers. |

I was thinking of getting a company of osgiliath veterans? As there stats seem the best for infantry. |

If you're gonna field them, get two or three companies. Same with your Citadel Guard, either more companies or you're just giving your foe a formation to kill. |

Unless they're Indomitable (and preferably R2), never take a single company. SO not worth it. Also, Gandalf is a lot of points at this level - rather, with Boromir AND Faramir, he is. No experience of the Trebuchet, but I'd say switch it for more comapnies. Consider using Faramir's Knights Battlehost (or similar) as well. Add another bolt thrower or two to the formation. Just a few thoughts. Is it a pure Dwarf list he plays? |

I can see the need for the trebuchet, they are amazing at knocking soldiers of of objectives as well as crushing heavy armour. I wouldn't discount it just yet (mostly because he's fighting dwarves). If you know the scenario is going to be one with objectives then I would definitely consider taking it. If the scenario is going to be to the death, then maybe it won't be so useful because of how you will fight. Terrain is also important to consider, if you play with lots of hills, it's probably a bad idea to have a trebuchet. |

Trebuchet isn't much use against Dwarfs because they tend to come in double or triple companies and rarely the 4+ that makes a warmachine good. One thing that springs to mind is switch Gandalf for Saruman and enjoy that loveliest of spells - Shatter Shields (as well as some extra free ranged damage and a 50% chance that they fail to charge you). |

Some good advice has already been given. I've had some good success with Gondor by having 4 comps per formation of WoMT, they can maneuver and still pack a punch. I would never take a single company, that's only 4 casualties to remove to kill the formation. I would keep try some different arrangements and see what happens. |

Pretty much the gist of it Partially designed that way for extra sales, but mostly because it looks more impressive. Don't forget that Dwarfs can get away with 2 or 3 company formations because they're able to take and dish out the hurt. Plus, multiple formations can charge the same enemy. |

I have read through the posts with interest. Some good advice, and based on my own experience (30+ games at least solely AGAINST Gondor, and a good 20 against dwarves as well) I have the following suggestions: Your list as it stands is pretty sound, but: - Citadel Guard, as pointed out above, don't take 1 company only, and certainly don't stick Pip and Gandalf in there! - Gandalf can be very effective even at 1000 points, use his unique Blinding Light to weaken a formation about to be charged to get more attacks. - Boromir is a hero/monster killer, keep him in the thick of things, use his might points to take out enemy Heroes if you can. - Lose Faramir and Pippin if you can, 20-33% of your army as a rule of thumb should be heroes/Epics and you already have 375/1000 with Boromir and Gandalf. (Or keep Pip and Faramir and lose the Boromir) - Trebuchet and Bolt thrower are ideal for cracking open heavy armoured dwarves, like any artillery, best in 2s or threes working together as formation breakers, but even one trebuchet pounding at Khazad Guard will debilitate them in time. As posted above though you want open terrain. BUT The main thing you need is more troops. Rank and file Warriors of Minas Tirith, The advantage of Minas Tirith is cheap heavily armoured troops. Take more formations of WoMT, use your numbers and higher movement/mobility to flank and charge the rear and sides if you can, especially after the shield walls have closed and the dwarves' line breaks up. Good luck, and smite them stumpy ones! |

Just realised, you cant have gandalf the white in 1000pts as he is over 25% of your army. If you want a decent spellcaster, take thranduil. He is awesome, and he can cast guide arrows on your archers to give them more dice when shooting. |

Actually I just costed the list posted above and its about 1120! A bit over 1000 points, unless the OP was just listing what he had available. Gandalf the Grey would be 200 and inside the decree of allies limit. I doubt 100 for the white extra is ever worth it. |

The White upgrade is tricky to make worth it, but if you can do so, is extremely versatile and useful. But a Heroic/Epic Duel will bump him off quickly - another reason Saruman is preferable (50% chance the enemy hero won;t even make it to you ;P ). I can vouch for Thranduil though - extremely good model (also gives you a decent Fight value for a company on the attack, causes Terror [reduces their Fight value sometimes] and has nice Epic abilities) to take and fairly cheap too! |

I guess I could drop gandelf for a while and that would give me 300 points for more formations as womt are only 25 points per company. He mayb a epic hero but more men will alway help!! |

Post subject: | Re: Losing badly! |
Definitely do it. 30% of your army in a single model is rarely (if ever) a good idea - espeically when a normal captain can drop them from the battle. |
