Post subject:  Beginner to the game: need help to know what to buy (Moria)

Hi there folks ! I will soon receive from a recent trade my first LOTR/The Hobbit miniatures. Here's what I'll get:

24 moria goblins on sprue
1 cave troll (can't remember if it's with spear or hammer)
1 Balrog.

So I easily guess that I'll have to buy The Hobbit rulebook or mini rulebook, and of course the Moria and Angmar SB.
But what should I buy after this to have at least a core force ?

Thx to anyone who answer :)

More goblins, for now another 24'll do :) Then buy a shaman and either Groblog or Durburz; they are both solid leaders, and compliment the shamans well. Personally I always choose Durburz. I'd play a few games before picking up any of the beasts. Lastly: your gonna want to buy some green stuff, goblin prowlers with shields are great elites for moria, but since there are no models for them, you gotta convert your normal warriors. However the conversion is really easy to do (just give the normal model a hood and/or a balaclava).

I personally really like the gundabad shamans; they are great in smaller games against mid range heroes with not much will to resist the weapon disintegration spell.

Go for some Gundabad Blackshields and scatter them throughout your force, they're much stronger than a regular Goblin and can be that hammer-blow you need to break through an enemy shieldwall. As SuicidalMarsbar (nice name) said, get a bit of green stuff and sculpt hoods onto some of your Goblins to get Prowlers, who again are better than regular Goblins. I'd also look for a blister of the old metal Goblins (this is the link: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... od1500580a ) and use them as Captains, because they look different and it always helps to have multiple heroes, particularly with the Warbands rules.

More Goblins, heroes, and another cave troll

Contrary to LordElrond, I would not get another troll, or any bats/wargs/spiders until you have played your force, and tried it out :)

Start out using standard more goblins, maybe a few prowlers/blackshields here and there, and then post your findings here, and we can tell you what will counter what problems you've run into.

As states above, Shamen, Shamen and more Shamen! I never field Goblins without several Shamen scattered throughout my force to make them far less squishy lol. I'd also recommend some Wild Wargs and Warg Marauders because normal Goblins are both slow and low in defense, so some fast units that can pack a punch are a must
