Well as your title and post call for different things I'll give both. Best generic captain IMO is a Uruk-hai captain. You can reach D7 with strength 5, pretty deadly. Best named "Captain" I'd probably say is Rumil because of his parry ability. By captain level I assume it's a 3 Might version of a factions generic (same attacks, wounds etc) |

Uruk-hai Captain is a good shout. You can't go wrong with a dwarf captain either...10pts higher than captains of men....but with higher fight, defence and courage |

Erkenbrand is great all over. defence 7, +2 courage Horn, 3 might and all at a very cheap price. |

I like Beregond and Damrod, purely cos they're cheap as chips and allow you more warbands |

Uruk hai captain with h.armour and shield for best Unnamed cappy - 5pts more than a gondor captain with shield and still with best fight value and S - same cost as dwarf cappy with less 1 courage and 1+ S - and cheaper compared to elf captains despite having less 1 fight and 2 courage |

Uruk-Hai captain for unnamed, mainly for strength and defence. Beregond for named, as he has some good stats for a relatively cheap captain. |

I would say Uruk Captain too. Also the Captain of the Black Guard because the courage boost he gets. For named Shagrat. He is like Uruk captain but with one less defence and one more might. |

Dwarf Captains are always a good investment - 65pts for a Defence 8 hero - most armies can spend whatever they want and still never reach that level of toughness! Solid Fight and Courage values too. As for named Captains, nothing beats Meriadoc, Captain of the Shire! An actually named Captain, and these days amazing value for points. For a measly 5 extra points in comparison to his old profile (i.e. the one still found in the Rohan list), he does not only become a non-independent hero, but he sort of gets his Horn for free (the same horn that only really benefits him when using him in or with a Shire list anyway), and gains both an extra wound and an extra attack as well! On the charge (mounted on his trusty pony) he actually becomes sort-of dangerous that way. No competition, simply one of the best models in the game. |

The character Clint Eastwood played in the Dollars trilogy - he was named The Man with No Name. So he was named but unnamed or nameless and therefore meets the contradictory requirements above. As for captains in Middle-earth, pick the captain to suit your army and style of play. If it all comes down to points values and wargear, you may as well put together a spreadsheet and work out who gives the greatest potential effectiveness at the least actual cost. I do say potential quite deliberately, as all captains can die, just like the rest of the minis. You need to have a strategy that does not hinge upon the performance of one mini as your opponent will surely see that and make every effort to mitigate against that. Roger, Oveur and Out. |

Everyone says all this stuff and that's fine but honestly Moria/goblin town goblin captain for his points? I'm not saying they're great. The fight value and defense is weak but why I rate them some of the best is because they still have might for heroic combat and decent strength to kill. Furthermore between one of those captains and a full warband you pay only 85-100 points. You could mob ppl and have people to do heroic moves most importantly to gain priority trap and swarm elites and take em down. |

What you mentioned is the advantage over the disadvantage of goblin's slow movement. |

For a generic captain the Mirkwood Ranger Captain is decent. You get elven bow, elven cloak and knife fighter special rule. Can very quickly go up to 3 attacks at F6 which is solid. Nice courage as well |

Surprised nobody has mentioned rivendell knight captain! He is the most undercosted one A high elf captain is 80pts And rivemdell knight captain for 10 extra points gets horse, lance and bow. |

Post subject: | Re: Best Named captain is...? |
Don't post pts values, but a high elf captain doesn't cost 80pts anyway so I guess it doesn't matter. The best named is either Boromir of Gondor for his awesomeness or Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth for his awesomeness, survivrability and leadership skills (e.g. Increased standfast and banner). |
