I really like Thranduil's new counts as banner rule, but I'm iffy on what number of Mirkwood cavalry will give me the most bang for my buck. I could obviously put 4 cavalry abreast on either side of Thranduil and all of them would benefit from his rule. The trouble of course is that I don't believe a line of 9 cavalry bases will be able to charge effectively, my enemy's warband would have to have a facing of about 14 inches in order to fit that much cavalry against them. This is more of a general question about how many cavalry bases you can line up before they start to crowd eachother out of base contact with the enemy. I'm guessing that the answer is going to be a pretty low number, maybe 4?

From my experience, you can easily get 7-8 Calvary models in a warband without it being too crowded. And most, if not all, with good positioning, could stay in range of Heroic Actions. Anything after that and you'll either have to clump together, or spread apart so much its not worth it. I hope that helps.

I agree, 6-8 is usually the optimum number of cavalry warriors to have on either side of of a hero.

The most important question about this nobody asked is at what points value?

They're going to be shooting At a cavalry line like that anyway, so I'm rarely fussed on my cavalry/hero count.

The trick with this is having enough so you reach the enemy, but also you don't want so many that the enemy shooting is directed at them. Their biggest problem is the D4 which means they will die in droves to crossbows. So personally for these guys in particular I would say 4-6.

The points value I have in mind is only 500. Before starting this thread I had something like this in mind.

Warband 1
Thranduil king of woodland realm w/horse
Mirkwood cavalry x5
Palace Guards w/ shields x3
Mirkwood elves w/ bows x4

Warband 2
Palace guard captain
Mirkwood elves w/shield and elven blade x2
Mirkwood elves w/ glaives x6
Mirkwoof elves w/ bows x4

But it seems people are suggesting a greater number of cavalry, so something like this?

Warband 1
Thranduil king of woodland realm w/ horse
Mirkwood cavalry x7
Mirkwood elves w/ bow x5

Warband 2
Palace guard captain
Mirkwood elves w/ shield and elven blade x5
Mirkwood elves w/ glaives x4
Mirkwood elves w/bow and elven blades x3

So, which list do you think is better? I was also toying with the idea of making warband #2 a bunch of mirkwood ranger arrow buddies, but that comes with a pretty steep point cost. It would eat into the amount of cavalry I can take.

Lol the 6-8 cavalry rule is about as valid at 350 as it is at 1000pts. Cavalry need heroes and you should always have one for around that number of warriors :)
