Hey One Ring!

You guys probably won't remember me, afterall it's been an age since I posted or was even active here, but since I got wind of this new game I felt someoen should definitely know about it, espescially a group of people who like Lord of the Rings like us hobbyists do.

So without further ado I present to you; The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. But what is it? I hear you say. Well, this new game is an Action RPG set in Middle Earth and I think, set in the time of the War of the Ring. As the name implies the game takes place in the North with the option to play as human, elf or dwarf (althoug hopefully later expansions will be released to incorporate all of Tolkien's realm).

But for me, that's not even the best bit. Thinking of games as enjoyable as Oblivion and Dragon Age, which I hope War in the North will have some semblance to, the only disappointing thing was no multiplayer.

Not any more.

War in the North is also set to have a 3-player multiplayer mode and online too. Now who is not excited about this?

And here's a little more for you guys.

That sounds pretty cool. I'd never heard of it before but if it's multiplayer then i'm intrested.

It seems to be a Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, if I've understood it correctly. Not like WoW/Guild Wars/WAR, which are MMORPGs, but an RPG that you can play online. Am I right in that assumption? It possibly has potential, but there's not a lot of anything to base any feelings on it for me so far. There's a teaser trailer, which is likely the opening sequence to the game. What I am intrigued in is how it will play: the forums say that these guys made Baldur's Gate, which I thoroughly enjoyed playing with my friend, however, I'd likely get bored playing it on my own and I don't currently have Xbox Live.

Gist of it: I am hopeful, but want to see more stuff first and it doesn't come out until June 2011, so I've got more pressing things first ;)

I don't think it's gererally a Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, but the system for that will work something like Borderlands? As in you can play through it single player but also team up online. You can only play as or with three or other people (can't remember), so its' not exactly huge.

Hopefully it'll play something like Baldur's Gate/Dragon Age though.

What do you guys think about mages though? As an RPG it's almost bound to have them and if you go frame by frame you can see a mage at the back running through the woods.

I was a bit dissapointed with conquest, so I hope that this game will be better.

There's no mention of "mages" on the game home site.

The three classes are

    Man
    Elf
    Dwarf

I have no idea how customisable these "classes" are. Can we alter features, gender and so forth?

It may well be that the "Elf" class has some sort of of magic, but isn't as physically strong; the Dwarf class will be very physically strong, but some sort of weakness while the man will be the balanced class. No idea.

It could be a lot of fun.

Hmmm, I think they're less of a class and mroe fo just a generic race setting. As in most RPGs I think there'll be a standard fighter/rogue/wizard class for each race and these will further be customizeable. I know it'd go against Tolkien's writings to have mages as a class within a game, but I doubt they can make a very sucessful RPG without magic.

As for altereing features/gender, if you were stuck with the same model in an RPG with not customization....well, I don't think you could brand it as an RPG at all.

Apparently there's an article in Playstation Magazine about it. I've got a link to a summary. Sounds pretty good. Mages are in, sadly, but they sound more subtle than FIREBALL TO THE FACE. Also sounds like you'll always have three people, whether other humans or AI. Couch co-op. Can play with two people on one console and one on another (online and such). Lots of customization in skills and looks.

All in all, it sounds pretty good and probably much better than Conquest. >_>

I don't know if the mage will be subtle, since it specifically states "•Mages will be more powerful, more offensive and stronger compared to mage class as featured in other RPG’s". I agree that it won;t be fireball to the face, but that could be because it says somethign about ice magic (snowball fight?).

I'm interested to see if you can have a party of, say, 3 dwarves... I'd imagine you can, otherwise there's not a heck of a lot of difference in choosing whom you play (other than your style) out of combat, skills wise.

It seems that it will be a join in and drop out style of co-op like the Lego games (Lego SW, IJ and Batman).

Looking more forward to it now, but would like some piccies ^^

Summary sounds good, although it'd be nice to play by yourself on occasion. I'm also wondering if its' possible not just to have three of the same race, but three of the same class, although if mages are going to be the more powerful class it might mean cranking up the difficulty.

Seeing characters from the films however....I hope they can get decent voice actors.

I'd very much like to see the ability to play three members of the same "race" and/or three members of the same class.

After all the "three hunters" were arguably three warriors. (Well, a ranger, some sort of uber archer and some sort of uber axeman, but you get the idea).

I'd love to know how much of a map area is involved and if new maps can be created.

The real question is....how much is it going to cost?

I'm guessing it will normal price for a 360/PS3 game, £30-40 at release, gets cheaper over time and on the internet.

All in all, looks absolutely amazing, well, the trailer does anyway.

Anyone else having problems registering there? I have tried several times and it always fails at the "select avatar" stage...

Me too.

It just died someplace along the way for me.

I meant to try it again today. I'll see.

I tried it in March or February and again yesterday and it wasn;t working.

Also, has there been any news on the game's progress? Or is it just the website that they're updating?

The website only emerged in the last few months, so don't panic yet. It may be a few more months before they put some meaningful information up there. Would love to know how levelling and combat will work. Lets hope they make it like Oblivion, though it seems unlikely.
