Post subject:  Affordable functional figure cases?

At current, I have one figure case from GW with the old red foam in - I remember buying it for £20-£30. I see they've now gone up to £36. They hold 108 figures. I currently have my 'Good' army in it - Rivendell, Arnor and (Room for) Lothlorien warbands.

I'm now at the point where I'm army building and each figure needs their own slot (I was so bad back in the day and two figures used to share a slot xD).

What are the best cases to buy? They need to be fairly similar to the GW one in size as I have limited storage options, and ideally I don't want to spend more than £30 - I desperately need something to put my evil army in - I've not even started to assemble or paint it yet as again I have limited storage for assembled models.

A good (cheap) option is to buy these: http://www.productsforwargamers.com/foam_trays.html and just store them in a cardboatrd box, transfering trays to your case whenever you need to transport. Or fully customisable ones from KR Cases (foams different size) you can get 4 layers in these instead of the GW's 3: http://www.productsforwargamers.com/foam_trays.html

KR Cases. They do foam trays that fit inside GW ones and up the capacity to 200 infantry, so you can squeeze more into your existing case. In mine I have 2 x 50 slot infantry trays and 1 x 50mm deep pick-and-pluck tray that can hold 24 cavalry or a variety of monsters. They're also doing a neat little half case now.

These ones will fit in your existing case.

Great idea there Hithero - if I can juggle some stuff around and find room for a largeish carboard box, I'll definitely take that on board.

Damian - the KR site confuses the hell out of me. It's just so clunky, I never know what I'm looking at. Would you be able to link me straight to the cavalry tray and the infantry tray you mentioned?

I use this website although it can be a tight fit to get 3 trays into a GW case. I currently have 1 standard GW foam as bottom layer, then Battleforam Infantry and finally a cavalry one to sit on top.

@Shieldmaiden,
Ha ha, yeah they have so many options it can get a bit confusing. The trays I have are for my GW cases, the 50 slot infanty tray is GWM4T and my cavalry/monster trays are GWV2T. Click on the second link in my last post, they're both there. The letter in each section on that page (N, M, V, E) relates to the size of the slots in the tray, 'M' trays have 50 slots, each one is 40mmx25mm. 'N' trays have 40 slots, each one is 50mmx25mm etc, etc. Each configuration of tray has different depths, so my LoTR minis go in the 25mm deep trays, but my Space Marines go in 32mm deep trays ('cos they have massive guns and chainswords sticking out). You can buy their trays individually or in sets, and there are a lot of options for the sets, so it's a bit overwhelming on first visit. They do have excellent customer service though.

I would echo Damian's comment about customer service though. I wasn't sure about which tray to get so I emailed them and got a quick reply with all the info I needed. I'm buying 2 more cases next month.

How durable is the cardboard though? Will it take a little light rain? I'll probably put it inside another bag if I take it somewhere.

It's pretty tough. I think the case would be ok in a light shower, but if I planned on carrying them around a lot then I would probably buy one of the outer cases too. I just shove mine in the car so getting wet isn't a huge problem.
