it would depend on if you were going for wotr or sbg
for wotr i suggest a rock solid block of dwarf warriors with shields along with a block of two handed axes. also get some rangers as tehy can ambush and are the only dwarves with longbows. for heros i suggest gimli because he has epic rampage and might 4 which tears through enemies. you might also want consider allying a spellcaster like radagast since the dwarves have none of thier own and maybe some cavalry. try and get drummers for your formation to equal the move of men/orcs ect. thier hasnt been a model released for it so you might have to covert them.
for sbg get someone like durin as they have defence 9 and 3 attacks. vault wardens for both types will help you esily hold onto objectives or choke points. i would suggest iron guard for sbg as they have throwing weapons + 2 attacks each.
hope that helps. i don't play dwarves but my friend does and his mix of tactices seem to work... most of the time
dwarves are generally slow but hard to kill so going against goblins and men is a good idea but thing like uruk hai have s4 and can penetrate the dwarves army easier
good luck!

If your going SBG, I would suggest to get something like 2boxes of warriors, dain and balin, a command blister, and a box of rangers. That should make a solid base with enough warriors and good heroes for any starter force. I think the Khazad guards are also good, and sometimes better then iron guard (higher defense). You should have more then enough points for a 750+ batlle. If you are only going to do smaller games, dont buy the rangers. Also, buy them really fast (before the 28th) because there is a prise-raise coming up!!!!!

First it's called SBG... No offense, just please check your grammar. I used to do this things. Em no grammar just spelling...
Anyway there are two rulebooks...
The one is with the mines of Moria and the other, the bigger one has the profiles from Siege in Gondor, Pelennor fields, Shadow and flame(here at the dwarves), Scouring the Shire plus the profile from MoM rulebook.
SO nwo don't buy the big one. I suggets to buy the Khazad-Dum supplement.
It has Durin, Mardin, Balin, Dain, Murin and Drar, Gimli(again), Dwarf king(again), Dwarf captain, Dwarf warrior, Dwarf ranger, Iron guard, Khazad guard, Vault warden team, Dwarf ballista.
Also you can find profiles for goblin army:
Durburz, Goblin captain(again), Goblin shaman, Balrog(again), Dragon, Warg chieftain, Goblin warriors(again), Goblin prowlers, Cave troll(again), Goblin drum, Wild warg(again), Bat swarm, Giant spider.
Plus 5 scenarios...

ow, too bad :( they are in the big book. The only way you can get them is buy the big book or look inside it in your local store ;p. If you give me your emailaddres I could mail them you, since we cant give them here (I'm not sure wheter I'm allowed to email them even :p).

EDIT: I just saw that Ultragreek said that you should get the Khazad-Dum book, thats a better idea actually.

PS. @ultragreek: I think that he made a type-error :)

Thanks again :)

There's just one thing. The GW website doesn't have the Khazad Dum book on it.

Welcome to the game Khafre.

There is some very good discussion about starting a dwarf army here:
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=19546&p=222728&hilit=dwarf+army#p222728

I hope this helps you decide what to buy.

Basically in the sbg there are 2 different types of dwarf army: Khazad dum and Erebor. With erebor you can ally with most of the other third age armies (the ones you see in the films) with the exception of rohan, which basically means if you start an army of gondor then you can still use you're dwarves in it. However Khazad dum has more units to use, like vault wardens and the best dwarf hero (Durin) so it is essentially a better list but you're allies become very limited meaning if you start another army it is unlikely you can use you're dwarves in it. There is a third type of dwarf army called durins folk and that can ally with everything but has very few unit options.

I am assuming you have the fellowship including gimli from the mines of moria box and since gimli is the 2nd best hero in the erebor list then i suggest making an army around him. First things first, buy the Khazad dum sourcebook (which is essential) then buy a box of warriors to start out and get them+gimli painted. With gimli and those warriors you could easily make a respectable force to play small 300pt games, which still take about half an hour to play. I would then suggest you buy a box of rangers so that you have a different unit to use and then play some 500pt games with the rangers+warriors and gimli, infact since you have the rest of the fellowship you could think about allying in another member of the fellowship (i suggest legolas or gandalf) If money is a problem then im sure you could make a viable army with gimli, gandalf and the box of warriors. Infact here is an army you could make

Gimli 90pts
Gandalf 170pts
Samwise gamgee 30pts
8 dwarf warriors with two handed axes 64pts
8 dwarf warriors with bow 72pts
8 dwarf warriors with shield 72pts
Total: 498 points, 7 might, 8 bows

While this probably isn't the best army ever made it IS a legal army and when playing against fellow beginners it will perform just as well as any of theirs. If you have the money to buy one, replace sam and one warrior with a standard bearer but if not dont worry, sam can be used effectively and if anyone tries to cast an are of effect spell when gandalf isnt around sam gets a free dice to resist it with so he is not entirely useless.

Incase you are wondering all troop types can be in both erebor and khazad dum armies (with the exception of vault wardens, they are khazad dum only)
Dain, gimli and balin can only be in an ereor army
Murin and Drar can ally into an erebor army, not a khazad dum one
Durin and mardin can only be in a khazad dum army

The reason behind certain armies not being able to ally with others is that the khazad dum army is set way before the events of lord of the rings, meaning that all the heroes included like durin are dead by the time armies like erebor had been founded.

Really easy fix for that. If you buy the Legions of Middle-Earth book you get the points value for each dwarf 'unit'. Then you go to the following link:

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/conte ... Id=5700005

This takes you to the official GW website with links to the profiles and special rules listed in the supplements which even includes the Khazad-dum book! :D :D You can even print off the PDFs while you're at it so you only have to use the link once.

As for starting, I'd say get two boxes of Dwarf Warriors and the Balin's Guard box. This will give you a decent hero with eight bodyguards and forty eight 'regular' soldiers. From there you can tailor your army however you see fit.

Personally, I would avoid the Rangers. You can pay 9pts for a fairly-accurate, well-armoured bowdwarf with a Str 3 shortbow or you can pay 10pts for a more-accurate less-armoured ranger with a Str 2 bow. The extra 6" and 16.7% accuracy increase isn't, IMO, as effective as a D6 archer with Str 3 which will wound more frequently. Besides, IMO, any dwarf going into battle with anything less than D6 should shave his beard and call himself a hobbit. :P
