All,

I've recently gotten interested in tabletop games for whatever reason. About 6 or 7 years ago I started collecting and painting LotR miniatures, but never really played the game as I was too young to really understand what was going on. Have since read the new War of the Ring stuff and gotten interested again. I'm personal to Gondor/Minas Tirith and want to create a WotR army based around them, but really have no idea where to start.

I've got a single box of Minas Tirith warriors and some citadel guards, as well as a literal [word deleted] ton of non-related miniatures -- when I was collecting I just bought whatever the hell I liked with no thought to gameplay. I've even got an unpainted Mumak in the closet...

I have a vague mental image of some Warriors of Minas Tirith, Faramir's Rangers, and some of the mounted dudes with Gandalf or Ithilien Boromir in the lead.

Any tips on where to start would be great!!

Thanks,
Ian

Greetings, and welcome to the One Ring!

If you are just starting out, and are looking to play WotR, then I suggest you pick up the Battlehosts Expansion and begin building your army around some of the formations in the book. They are very well themed and can make for some pretty strong in-game combos.

Thanks! I will certainly get a copy of it. The last rule book I own is the big blue one that covers the strategy battle game, but not WotR.

I'm also curious as to where everyone buys their minis? They're a bit pricey on the GW website, which is where I always remember buying mine after the local shop closed down.

And I hear they no longer provide metal models? That they're resin or something?

I purchase a lot of mine through online distributors, many of whom will give about 20% discount off of the retail amount, although sometimes it is just as cheap to order from GW by the time you count in for shipping. Ebay is a great place to pick up models on the cheap, but it's very hit or miss if you are looking for particular minis. You can also pick up the rulebooks on there from time to time.

GW has just recently decided to start producing their metal models as a resin product instead. They are slowly converting their lines, and so far only a few models are available in the resin but more are on the way. There have been quite a few Quality Control issues with this new "Finecast" line, so it may take a while to get all the kinks worked out. I have only purchased one Finecast model, a Space Marine Terminator Librarian, and it has some issues with bubbles in the resin, so I am going to have to call GW's Customer Service and see what they can do for me.

Interesting -- I had always preferred the plastic models to the metal ones, mainly because I have a thing about super glue and have spent most of my life building plastic ship and airplane models before discovering LotR.

Right now I am really interested in getting the Boromir in Ithilien miniatures -- however I only want the "on foot" model. Is there somewhere I can do this other than luck on eBay? I just can't justify spending $33 on the same character.

Great info and thanks for the quick responses guys, it really helps. :)

No problem. You'll find that most of us here are fairly amicable and ready to pitch in with advice or assistance if we can.

Sorry to hear about your issues with superglue, as the older metals and new resin models require it.

As for your question about Boromir, I'm not aware of any way to purchase them separately except for on eBay, however you could try the trading post on this forum. You said that you have a bunch of miniatures that don't pertain to Gondor, so it is possible that you might be able to work out a trade with one of our members for something that you no longer want.

That's a really excellent idea and I hadn't thought of that! I'm on vacation right now and so can't inventory my minis, but once I get home I'm definitely going to do that.

I probably don't need two boxes of Easterlings and Haradrim to complete a Tower of Ecthelion company... lol.

You can also try buying on Craigslist which you can usually pull off for 1/3 retail with some painted mini's but you will have to be prepared to buy all of them and picking it up. That's what I was doing to bulk up on WoMT and Orcs which are the most common and trading/selling within my game group the rest of the factions. You'll get more Warriors of Minas Tirith than you can deal with (I had to stop no matter how good the deal was)

On Ebay I'd suggest getting all your Hero's at once from one vendor and you'll save a bundle aswell. Anything rare (metal) you'll have a bidding war on your hands so either proxy or buy them slowly over time from your vendor.

I'd aim for 12c of WomT/Archers, 6c of Knights. That's 500 points without hero's and I'm sure you can string up some elves/rohan/dwarves as allies. Build some Siege or proxy and you'll have a decent army. I used D&D Miniatures Lords of Madness #52 Trebuchet which fits perfect on its large base. I also built 2 Bolt Throwers with some scrap lathe and BBQ skewers. A 1000 points is quite easy to attain. Have fun collecting!

What game manuals etc should I buy? The last time I was involved in this stuff was late 2007. I'd like to play WotR but right now the SBG is drawing my interest a bit more since I don't have the ability to amass a huge army right away.

The two essentials for Gondor in the SBG are Legions of Middle-earth and Gondor in Flames.

Thanks!

I have "The One Rulebook" as well as some of the other supplements but I will keep my eye out for those.

Some more questions:

1. Is there a plastic box set of Rangers of Ithilien? Aren't the "Rangers of Middle-earth" the Dunedain from Arnor?

2. What is the "Grey Company"?

3. What are the "Blackroot Vale archers"?

Sorry if I'm being dense.

1. Rangers of Middle Earth box set is for GC, Arnor and Gondor, they have the same stats and use the same models.

2. Grey Company (GC) is limited thematically to the plastic Rangers, Rangers of the North (RotN), Dunedain, and a few heroes like Arathorn, Aragorn, Halbarad and the Twins. They also are allowed a 100% bow limit, provided you take a RotN or Dunedain for every 4 plastic rangers. More info about them is in the Ruin of Arnor book.

3. Blackroot Vale archers are from Gondor, part of the fiefdoms list. You have to take Duinhir, a hero model released last year, and he gives your Blackroot Vale ranger warriors special abilities. I believe his stats are in a PDF on the GW site. I don't recall his special rule, but IIRC he and his archers are more effective against monsters (trolls, mumak, etc).

Unless of course you are referring to the 'Grey Company' as seen here: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... rod1840001 ?? Admittedly I couldn't tell you what they do if you were as I am no longer into the gaming aspect of things and only know about minis and profiles pre 2008/9 but I am sure someone who frequents these parts of the forum can help you out.

In SBG these models have the same profile as a Ranger of the North.
