Mines of Moria.

When I started the SBG I never worried about the mines of Moria box set, being a long time 'elf player' in warhammer fantasy I bought myself the rulebook and a few boxes of wood elves and the last alliance. Nowadays my rulebook is shot to hell and I need the fellowship but.......
I am not sure what exactly what the miniature rulebook contains, could someone please give me a heads up if you still get all of the unit entries that are in the main one?
I need to know because I have to buy it online and if the rulebook is not the same as the large book (in terms of unit entries) I will not bother with the set at all, as I can get the fellowship models though other means.

The mini rulebook has the majority of the same rules, both versions have the same missing profiles. There isn't really much difference, though I've seen little of the MoM one so don't know for surer.

Thank you for your input on second thought I better drive the hour out to my locals store just to check. I am not spend $138 on something that does not contain the same rules as the rule book.

$138? Ah a fellow Australian then. Yeah I don't even own any lotr sourcebooks or the ripening. Just going retro with the old Battle Games mags(Awwww yeah) But yeah pretty sure the mini rulebook has the same stuff though.

The two books have the same introductions and explanations of the the rules. THen the big hardback goes thru each grouping (the Shire, Mordor, Minis Tirith etc) separately, with background info about each one, whereas the mini book just lists good characters and evil characters. Then the hardback adds roughly 80 pages of modelling info, painting suggestions and scenarios.

WE have both, the small one is great for packing in your case - the hardback is much more readable, it's possible to absorb much more information from it.

Both the Mines of Moria Rulebook (mini) and the "One Rulebook To Rule Them All" (Hardback) contain the complete set of rules you need to play the game. However, the MoM rulebook has less profiles--it does have a good amount of Heroes and Warriors for Good and Evil, but not as many as the One Rulebook. It also has no fluff, and no hobby material.

I believe all of The Last Alliance profiles can be found in the MoM Rulebook, but I'm not so sure about the Wood Elves.

the wee rule book just had stats for stuff found in the films, though the big book did forget the army of the dead!!1

MoM is definitely worth getting. The rulebook doesn't have as much as the big one in terms of modeling, but is much nicer when taking places. I think it even has all of the same stats in it, though I may be wrong. The evil minis are great, 24 goblins and a cave troll is enough to start a Misty Mountains army. The Fellowship models don't look that great though. Boromir and Gimli are the best looking of them, though the hobbits and Legolas are decent. I loath the way that Aragorn looks and Gandalf's beard makes him look obese. Still, it is worth it.

I just did a quick comparison - there are a couple of profiles missing from the mini book, for instance it has Gimli but not Dain, it has Shagrat and Gorbag but no Orc Shaman or Goblin drummer. Elves miss Glorfindel from the smaller book but the warrior profiles are all the same, including captain. Overall I would guess there are maybe a dozen profiles missing from the Mines of Moria book - but in a game profiles are much easier to find, as it groups Good and Evil together, rather than breaking it down into separate forces as in the bigger book.

I really like the hobby section in the big book, and as you say its so much easier to find stuff.

Don't waste your money on a Mines of Moria set! It has only the most common models, found on EBay for pennies. The rules books--both the mini and the hardback--also turn up regularly on EBay. All profiles are findable (PM me). I have only ever owned the mini and don't plan to play scenarios that require the rules for swimming. Save your money for elites and heroes that don't show up on EBay.

Sadly I'd agree.

When I first got started the MoM set was only $50 new. The mini-rules are awesome to have. They are easy to transport, quick to find things and much easier to use at the game table in my opinion. It was also great getting the plastic Fellowship just because I could then focus on normal warriors and use the Fellowship (sometimes as proxies) while waiting to get metal replacements.

But now the set is WAY over priced...but so are most of the models from GW. You can often find it parted out on ebay as mentioned earlier and get the plastic fellowship for maybe $5 total, and the rules for under $20. It's also very likely to find people leaving the hobby more and more now and one of them may be willing to just pass on the rules. Or someone may have converted over to WotR only and not mind "lending" you their SBG rules on a permanent basis.
