Post subject:  Warband/troop choice ratios in 400, 500 & 600 point armies?

Hi,

Wondered if anyone could help with a couple of questions below:

1)What's the Ideal amount of warbands in a 400, 500 and 600 point list?. i.e, whilst having only one or two warbands in a 400 point list may make sense (due to the limited points available), are just one or two warbands in a 500-600 point list too few?

2) Regarding troop choices..what's the ideal ratio of having troops with spears, shields or ratio of cavalry in your army?

This of course could go on forever (ideal ratio of elites, monsters etc). But interested in seeing whats suggested.

Cheers,

Get Lonely Knights excellent Armybuilder:
http://www.lonelyknight.0fees.net/?ckattempt=1
and you will quickly find the average number of warbands for points.

There are so many more important variables between armies, however...

Generally, you will want equal spears and shields...

Cavalry depends on preference, of course, but Monsters (especially flying ones) have made them vunerable.

Thanks bruceqn. Will head over to Lonely Knights armybuilder now to check it out.

I do have three of the current/old sourcebooks (Kingdoms of Men, Moria & Angmar & Mordor) but interested in seeing what it suggests re average number of warbands suggested.

Bruce's suggestion is not incorrect but I have several reasons to mention it.

I don't like the lonely knights army builder.

#1-It ruins the organic creation you'll find yourself doing as a player. The more you build armies yourself the better understanding you'll have of the answer to your question about ratios.
#2-The army builder will take the random units you own and plug them into an army with no sense of synergy. In addition, you may see the amount of troops in provides you with, but no reason why.

Basically as you probably expected, there is no set answer.

I've had games at 450 with three warbands and monsters, but I've also had armies at 750 with three warbands.

Generally I'd suggest to have minimum two at 400.
Between 2-3 500
3 minimum Id say starts at 650 for me generally.
750 I like to try to get to 4 but its really not necessary.

Etc

In my opinion, the amount of troops in an army isn't as important as the quality.
I once did a 900 point battle with 3 models (Balrog, Sauron (with ring), and an uruk captain) and I still won, but it was close.
I know that is a bit more than 500 but the point is that if you have some strong heroes, you can still win. :lurtz: :sauron:

As LordoftheBrownRing said, you should aim for at least 1 warband per ~200 points, though depending on the army and how heavy you go on elite troops, you can get a bit more or less. An all goblin town army is likely to get far more, and an army using multiple monsters, or 100+ point heroes is likely to get less, and an army with a Dragon, Sauron, Aragorn with Anduril, etc, is going to have at least 1 warband less.

This game is all about preferences--but the Armybuilder is just a palatte: you choose the colors and the mix. It doesn't actually do anything but the math...

But even tools are never completely neutral... I love it because it frees me to play around quickly. I can see exactly what I can do with what I have, or I can put together dream teams to make my next buying or conversion choices. I'd highly recommend trying it for yourself before deciding.

I try to work on the idea of having about 6 mounted warriors or a minimum of 9 infantry warriors per Warband. The number of warbands per points level is then dependant on the cost of warriors (start with captains for getting a rough idea for the number of warbands, then once you have a ball park play with named heroes).
